Essay
Choose any character in the text and analyze the character from an emotional. psychological.
psychosocial, psychoanalytic, or spiritual perspective. This does not have to focus solely on
Yunior, but can focus on several of the women in various stories, the mother, the absent father,
etc.
If you choose to focus on Yunior, rather than discuss the obvious, his cheating lifestyle, also
consider the ways that he transforms, changes, grows in maturity or diminishes in immaturitv
chronologically, socially or culturally.
Discuss one (or more) of Diaz’s
motits (See Week 2 PowerPoint Presentation)
For example
how does Diaz weave memorv throughout several stories and what is his intention in doing so?
Ur, as another example, how does Diaz construct a metacognitive, metanarrative, metalictive text
in which writing acts as a motif, strategy or theme in various stories? You may, as an example.
discuss how Daz constructs a text that serves as a memorv and/or tournal and/or novel that
documents Yunior S life and is also written by Yunior. What is the significance of this as it relates
to the action of the text in specific stories?
Focus on specific themes that Diaz refers to in his talks and lectures (See Week 1 or Week 2
Videos). How does he weave in his perception of race and racism in the United States? What are
his views on immigration in the US? These are just two examples; however, Diaz indicates that
he is focusing on many aspects of US society
and the ways in which it views, treats, discriminates
against people of color, immigrants, etc.
Discuss the concent of hvbridtv? and identity mn the text. In nostcolonial theorv. hvbridty reters
to a mixing of cultures, e.g., East and West. In what aspects 1S Diaz presenting hybrid characters
and/or a hybrid text? Examples are Dominican and American.
foreign and native, immigrant anc
citizen, English and Spanish. What is Diaz ultimately saying about living in the US but being of
Dominican or immigrant background? How does he critique this? You mav focus on a specific
character or the text overal.
*Hvbridity is a cross between two separate races or cultures. A hybrid is something that is mixed,
and hvbriditv IS Sumo V mixture.
Discuss space and environment as a necessarv element in the stories. Diaz focuses on several
places throughout the book, the Dominican Republic, U.S., New Jersey, New York, Boston, and
within this he gives more detail about specific places/spaces. Through the voice of Yunior we
learn that Magda is Cuban but lives in the Bergenline, Flaca is white from outside Paterson, Alma
is Dominican but from Hoboken and can’t speak Spanish nor “acts” traditionally Dominican.
Why is this important to the characterization of the women Y unior dates? Why is this important
for Diaz? What is the significance of this? How does Diaz use the landscape as
part of his
message about the immigrant experience? What do these spaces represent?
Discuss either masculinity and/or femininity in the text. How is this constructed by Diaz through
Yunior, Rafa, Papi, Mami? Based on Diaz’s own words, what does it mean to be Diasporic
Caribbean, African. Dominican, heteronormative? Within this you can discuss how or why
Yunior objectifies women and the significance of this OR you can do a character analysis of the
women themselves. One interesting analysis can be that of Mami. Is she in any way responsible
for Rafa’s and Yunior’s excessive, heteronormative masculinity? If so (or not) how so (or not)?
