We’re beginning this week with a look at how language is shaped to make meaning. Roland Barthes’ essay references some of the other work/ideas we’ve discussed in class: semiotics, Julia Kristeva’s intertextuality, and the active role of the participant. As much as possible, try to apply what he’s saying about written text/language to other forms of inscription and creativity (like image-making). Two guiding questions include: How does the interaction of various disciplines produce meaning? As participants, how do we actively create meaning (and thus contribute to the work) through a combination of text and imagery? What other things come to mind?
