The Model Minority Myth Essay: How can being an upstanding American citizen be a double-edged sword? After over a hundred years of anti-Asian sentiment and legislation, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) post-World War II welcomed the possibility that their fellow Americans would no longer view them as competition for jobs or threat to national security but instead as “good Americans.” This idea of the “good American” or “model minority” recasts AANHPIs as prime examples of representing the quintessential American values of opportunity, meritocracy, and the American Dream. The model minority myth glosses over diversity, inequity, the array of adversity, and the psychological impact faced by AANHPIs. To be clear, the model minority “myth” is a fallacy, a misconception, or misbelief. In other words, the idea that Asian Americans are the “model minority” is a stereotype, but it has real-life implications. Therefore, I am asking you to research how the “myth” has led to dangerous consequences for Asian Americans. You will search for six (peer-review) sources that center on the impact of model minority myth. See what sources pop up and: 1.) Read the source 2.) find the author’s argument and the study significance 3.) Summarize the source and why the author’s argument is significant in 4-5 sentences. Do this four times for all four sources you find. PAPER GUIDELINES
