In this assignment, you’ll use a comparison exercise to practice listening closely to music, with special focus on timbre and the voice.
Instructions:
Review this Spotify playlist (Links to an external site.)and pick TWO tracks to use for this exercise. Listen carefully to both tracks several times, with special attention to the timbre and sound of the voices. Write a response of 2 to 3 paragraphs comparing and contrasting the vocal sound in each track, and reflecting in each case on what the vocal sound has to do with your own experience of the song overall. Consider questions such as the following:
How would you compare the timbre or other aspects of the different singers’ voice? Does the vocal sound change over the track or is it consistent?
In each case, how do you think vocalist’s sound impacts the feeling you get from the song, or the message or feeling that you think it is intended to give?
How does the vocalists’ sound relate to the other sounds and timbres used in the song (instruments or electronics), or to other aspects of the music?
