Prompt
Compare the warning poster distributed throughout Las Vegas announcing nuclear tests (Primary Source 3.6, Doom Towns p. 175) and the claims made on it with the reality of nuclear testing, both at Nevada test sites and in places like Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific. Were the impacts of nuclear testing justified by the realities of the Cold War?
Paper Guidelines (Read everything before submitting)
Formatting
1. Your paper needs to be 2-4 pages in length with standard formatting (1-inch margins and double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman font)
2. Put your name and title on the first page of writing, do not add a standard MLA header or add excessive spaces into your header.
3. Your paper needs to make use of material in Doom Towns, including some of the primary sources. While you can incorporate material from Give Me Liberty, the primary source documents and materials in Doom Towns provides you more than enough material to construct a paper responding to the prompt. Your paper needs to include at least four specific references to material in Doom Towns to earn a passing grade. You do not need to read all of the primary sources documents, but an A-level essay will incorporate evidence from them while presenting a comprehensive well-rounded argument.
No outside sources are allowed. Use of outside sources will result in automatic failure on the assignment.
Citations
You have two sources available, the textbook and Doom Towns. The formatting for both sources are as follows (copy and paste into your footnote and change the page number accordingly):
Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!: an American History, OSU Brief 6th Ed. (New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2020), 629.
Andrew G. Kirk, Down Towns: The People and Landscapes of Atomic Testing, A Graphic History (New York: Oxford University Press, 2017), 65.
After the first citation you can shorten your footnotes:
Foner, 630.
Kirk, 65.
Tips
This is not a book report. The goal of the paper is to use the book to analyze the period of history. Think of the book and the material in it as a source, rather than the centerpiece of your paper. Do not just summarize the book, that will not contribute to a successful grade.
Writing papers is hard. However it is substantially easier if you utilize your grader or Dr. Eberle to discuss the paper and plan out what you are going to write. You should also plan on bringing drafts or other material to office hours, all of us are more than willing to look over your work before it is to due and provide feedback on the material.
You may also use the OSU writing center. However keep in mind they do not have the historical context for the assignment. They can help you with grammar, argument, and proofreading, but they cannot assess your paper for historical issues connected to the course.
There is no “correct” way to write the paper and we are not looking for perfection, but we are looking to see that you have read the material, processed it, and thought through a meaningful response. This takes time and energy, do not wait until the last minute to write the paper, it will hurt your grade if your do.
Your paper is checked against the TurnItIn database of online materials and other students papers. This assignment is worth 20% of your overall grade and plagiarism will result in serious academic integrity issues and you will spend more time trying to get around TurnItIn or your grader than you will writing your own paper.
