0This semester there is one kind of “extra credit” project available: visit an off-campus museum. It is my opinion that many of the exhibits in select museums complement the contents of the lectures, readings and videos discussed in this course. This project is due no later then Sunday, April 24, 2022 by midnight). With break coming up this would be a full week whereby you could visit a museum. But you do have the remainder of the semester to do this as well.
Goal: you are to produce a 3-4 page paper (double-spaced, typed); for me more is always better then less. So if you hand in a 2 pager you can be sure that you will not get the maximum number of points. These projects are simply an attempt to relate the course to what is going on in the world today. If you have ideas or know of resources that seem relevant and are not included below please feel free to propose them ASAP.
Off-campus museums
Most museums have a website with specific exhibits. TASKS: Review the museum’s
website on a specific topic, e.g., human origins, Early civilization (e.g., Egypt, Mesopotamia, Mesoamerica), Native Americans (such as the Lenape at the University of Pennsylvania Museum or another group at either of the NYC or DC Museums). Select at least “2” subtopics described therein. Using those topics as a guide, visit the exhibit and describe ALL materials relevant (include a few photos of the artifacts, ecofacts, etc. viewed). Outline the relevance of your descriptions to the course, i.e., what aspects of the exhibit relate to Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Diversity, etc.. Your paper should contain all these elements.
1. “Human Origins” exhibit at the “Museum of Natural History, NYC

2. Civilization Halls (Egypt, Mesopotamia, MesoAmerica) Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC www.metmuseum.org/
3. Human Origins exhibit at the Natural History Museum (Smithsonian – Washington DC) https://naturalhistory.si.edu/exhibits/david-h-koch-hall-human-origins
An alternative to a NYC or DC museum would be to visit one in Philadelphia. Each has
exhibits with contents covered (or to be covered) in the 2nd half of the semester. Examples are:
4. University of Pennsylvania Anthropology/Archaeology Museum. http://www.museum.upenn.edu/
5. Mutter Museum in Philadelphia http://muttermuseum.org/
6. The Barnes (new exhibit on artwork from the American Southwest Natives)
A synopsis of your tasks: (1) present the full web site address associated with your museum; (2) describe the contents of the exhibit that you attended; (3) relate the content to specific class topics (one that has either been discussed in class or will be [i.e., it is a topic in the syllabus and one that we will discuss after break]); and (4) do you find this exercise useful and pertinent to this course; defend your position. (5) What do you know now after visiting the museum that you didn’t know before?
