Individual Written Assignment/Report
Size: 1200-1500 words
Topic Area: Organization Theory and Your Professional Future
Organization Theory: In an applied discipline like Business Administration, theory is extremely important (i.e. systematic knowledge to both understand and implement). However, OT knowledge, and university course knowledge more broadly is often framed abstractly and ‘out there’. To address this, this assignment asks you to seriously consider the application of organization theory concepts to visions of your future self. This report can be understood as a kind of support document for your future self, framing ways to improve futures in a number of contexts. One important consideration of an planning exercise is the rapidity and complexity of environmental change – our industries, our markets, our regulatory frameworks, our technologies, our social and professional values and preferences, our organization structures, and even (and especially) our fundamental planetary ecology support system – given all of this, we need to envision the future as plural possibilities rather than a single one. This practice – called scenario planning, and widely used in business and professional contexts today – is similar to your job for this assignment. Overview of the Report: This report is to be 1200-1500 words. Relatively standard report format – APA for referencing, 1.5 space, 2.5 cm margins etc. As a report, clear subheadings, good writing and editing will all help, but the main value of this assignment will come you’re your exploration and thinking. Your report will have two parts:
Part 1: Your future professional self (approximately 1 page): Take some time to think about some kind of relatively likely/plausible scenario for your life FIVE years after you graduate from university. For this, try to add as much texture/context as you might be able to. Who/what/where/why/how are you where you are? Where are you? What kind of life will you live? What kind of profession or professional work will you be in? What industry? The more shape / detail you can imagine here, the more that Part 2 can use it. (Obviously you cannot and should not ‘know’ your life more than five years from now. Potentially combine a ‘likely’ and a ‘hopeful’ idea that you have.)
Part 2: Organization theory helping your future professional self: (approximately three or four pages) Your job here is to propose and explain ONE key concept/tool/skill from Chapters 10, 11 or 13 of our Organization Theory text that you think will be extremely and particularly relevant to remember and/or add to each of the following FOUR scenarios:
– If you are a functional professional (i.e. a marketer, an accountant, a data analyst, a salesperson)
– If you are a manager (ie. your primary role is managing and leading the performance of a group of professionals and/or staff)
– If you are a business owner, a consultant, a senior leader (i.e. you have significant responsibilities for running the whole ship, whether this is a small consulting business, a startup, a family business, or you have an executive or near executive role in a business)
– AND (a realistic but tricky proposition) if a year before this five years after graduation, your business or industry or profession experiences significant disruption, serious turbulence, dramatic and messy restructuring and destructuring. What do you do if/when things unravel? SOURCES:
You only need to use the text for this. You are welcome, however, to use other sources to better understand text concepts that you are using for this report. You do NOT need to. If you are, I suggest you find sources that are high quality, thoughtful and contemporary, but less difficult to read than journal articles. (You are welcome to use journal articles, and of course sources of this quality are especially appreciated by those of us grading.) Some good sources include the following …
1. World Economic Forum – found at wef.org – a source of a great deal of extremely well-grounded work on social, economic and environmental issues and their connection to business and society.
2. Harvard Business Review – found on EBSCO, one of Trent’s online databases. (Otherwise, you will find a very costly paywall to deal with.) This is the most influential business periodical in the world, and you should look at it. Make sure you are looking at actual articles for this paper, not single page discussions or reviews. To delimit it in EBSCO, just put JN “Harvard Business Review” in your search parameters.
3. Stanford Social Innovation Review – found on EBSCO, one of Trent’s online databases. This is an extremely influential periodical for people interested in the social, environmental and community aspects of organization, business and management.
To delimit it in EBSCO, just put JN “Stanford Social Innovation Review” in your search parameters.
4. Strategy + Business – found on the internet. This is a pretty good online information source with quality information often taken from academic and professional research. It is produced by PwC (formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers), a worldwide management consulting firm. www.strategy-business.com
5. The Guardian – found at https://www.theguardian.com/international – A high quality journalistic source of information that is NOT within a paywall
