Description: This assignment asks you to write a response that thematically links the readings in some way that you have deemed relevant. You must include all of the weeks’ topics, but you obviously cannot include all of the readings, so you choose ones that you find representative for your purpose. Everyone’s assignment will be slightly different as a result.
The purpose of this assignment is to have you think about the ideas, issues, meanings, etc. It is to help your understanding of the Renaissance period and to perhaps reveal an idea or two that you will develop into your critical essay at the end of the course. Understand that this assignment has you “swimming the surface” rather than “diving deep” as you would with a critical essay that presents a thesis and solid evidence. Do mind style and grammar.
Example: suppose you are interested in what passions some of these writers/characters have and the effect of those passions. You could construct a critical review about Ascham’s passion regarding education, the love professed and responded to in Marlowe’s and Ralegh’s two poems, the dedication of More and Askew, and the downside of passion in Doctor Faustus. Again: this assignment does not present thoroughly investigated thesis but rather an exploratory approach to a potential analysis. Some other examples of general thematic links that could apply to these session topics and readings:
