In a five-page essay (double-spaced), consider the Parthenon from Plato’s point of view. Through analysis, reason, and argument, place this monument within the philosophy of Plato. “That which changes least is most real,” is one of Plato’s dictums. Keeping this in mind, as well as his ideas about the nature of reality (as diagrammed on the “simile of the line”), his notions regarding the tri-partite soul, his ideas regarding the ideal society, and his attitudes toward art, address or consider how this temple “fits” into Plato’s view of the world. Present Plato’s ideas and interpret them when necessary in your descriptive analysis. Be sure to consider whether Plato would equate the profession of an architect with that of the artist (painters and poets for the philosopher), or would he have made a distinction? Be sure to cite any sources employed, including this course and any outside sources.
Checklist for ideas to consider:
Where may the structure lie on Plato’s simile of the line? Consider also the “optical refinements” the architects employed (do these contribute or detract from its integrity?) What role does the quantitative idea of beauty play?
The temple doesn’t have a soul, but the architects did, as did Athenians experiencing the edifice. To what part of the soul would it appeal? What part(s) of the soul were being exercised in its conception?
How would the temple fit into Plato’s idea of an ideal society (with its Guardians, Auxilliaries, Producers)? Does it keep one in the Cave* or lead one out?
Would Plato perceive architects to be the same as artists, or different? Why?
