1. In the Ancient / Medieval literature that we have read, the conception of “Otherness” is often written onto barbarians, mythical beings, or monsters of some form. Using a minimum of two sources that we have read, examine how this idea of “Otherness” functions within this literature. What does the difference of these Others reveal about the society they are from? How can we understand the Others in the texts? Do we find them sympathetic? What does this sympathy do for the stories? For us a modern readers?
2. In much of the literature that we have read, a repressed view of the feminine exists within a patriarchal world. Using at least two pieces, examine the placement of women in ancient societies. How are women portrayed? What roles do they fill in these patriarchal kingdoms? How are their identities created? And what does it mean when the images of them go against this schema?
3. A lot of the poetry that we have examined usually has some underlying political / social / moralistic underpinnings that detail the work. Looking specifically at one of the groups we have studied, explain the potential political / social / moralistic underpinnings of one of the poems. What could its potential purpose have been within the society that creates it? Is it one of celebration? Propaganda? Religion? Didacticism? Explain how you see this working in the poem and ultimately show me where you see this ideology taking place in it.
