Questions/Prompts 10 points each 1. In The Shape of Fear, W.E.B. Du Bois discussed the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan during the 1920s. Who joined the Klan, and why? Where was there a strong Klan influence and why (he spends some time on Ohio, in particular – why)? Du Bois also claimed the “mob” posed more danger to the country than the Klan. Who – and what – was the “mob,” and why was it dangerous? What were the concerns of white, middle-class, Protestant Americans, and why did they support Klan ideals and the actions of the “mob?” Who did the “mob” target and why? Were they justified in their actions? 2. Both Samuel Strauss, in his essay, Things are in the Saddle, and Helen and Robert Lynd’s field study of Middletown, focused on the importance of consumption and consumerism to white middle- class Americans during the 1920s. Why was consumption so important to American identity and middle-class values? What consumer goods did middle-class Americans prioritize and why? Did the residents of Middletown represent Strauss’s argument about consumption, consumerism, and American citizenship? How so? Are Strauss’s arguments and the Lynds’ observations an accurate assessment of American values and identity – during the 1920s and today? 5 points each 3. In his Testimony to Congress on Unemployment, Oscar Ameringer detailed the suffering he witnessed across the country as a result of the Great Depression. In the Bronx Slave Market, Marvel Cooke and Ella Baker reported on the plight of African American women in the city. Ameringer, on the other hand, did not discuss how the Depression effected African Americans at all (and only one, very brief, mention of women). Who did Ameringer focus on during his testimony and why? How were the experiences recounted by Ameringer similar or different from what was going on in the Bronx? And what exactly was going on in the Bronx? Who benefitted from the economic depression (and why?) 4. What were Fanny Christina Hill’s experiences working at North American Aviation during WWII? What obstacles did she encounter in the workplace? She went into detail about the discrimination she faced at NAA, but also pointed out that African American men experienced a different type of discrimination – how so? Despite the obstacles, Hill repeatedly said she enjoyed her job and found it fulfilling – why? In addition, discuss Hill’s experiences living in South Central Los Angeles. What positive and negative experiences did she have? What happened when African Americans started moving into the neighborhoods of Compton and Watts? 5. What was life like at the Japanese internment camp Tanforan, according to Charles Kukuchi? What was the removal process like for Kukuchi and his family? What happened once they were interned? Did Kukuchi believe internment was justified? Please be specific. Do you see any connections between Kukuchi’s experiences in the camp and other sources we’ve read this semester (and why)?
