In his Testimony to Congress on Unemployment, Oscar Ameringer detailed the suffering he witnessed across the country as a result of the Great Depression. In the Bronx Slave Market, Marvel Cooke and Ella Baker reported on the plight of African American women in the city. Ameringer, on the other hand, did not discuss how the Depression effected African Americans at all (and only one, very brief, mention of women). Who did Ameringer focus on during his testimony and why? How were the experiences recounted by Ameringer similar or different from what was going on in the Bronx? And what exactly was going on in the Bronx? Who benefitted from the economic depression (and why?) 4. What were Fanny Christina Hill’s experiences working at North American Aviation during WWII? What obstacles did she encounter in the workplace? She went into detail about the discrimination she faced at NAA, but also pointed out that African American men experienced a different type of discrimination – how so? Despite the obstacles, Hill repeatedly said she enjoyed her job and found it fulfilling – why? In addition, discuss Hill’s experiences living in South Central Los Angeles. What was life like at the Japanese internment camp Tanforan, according to Charles Kukuchi? What was the removal process like for Kukuchi and his family? What happened once they were interned?
