In this part, we’re keeping with the theme of ‘biotechnology’, but using it loosely as we utilize ~technology~ to create ~bio~ resources. Instead of your instructor providing learning activities in this week’s assignment and discussion, you get the opportunity to create and share electronic study resources as digital artifacts that relate to the field of cellular biology. Your work can connect to any topic shared throughout the course, so don’t feel that it must be about biotechnology unless you wish to specifically focus on Module 14. Scroll down to view an example of all steps required in this part.
Activities such as these are called open pedagogy tasks that allow you to develop the curriculum and share your work with other students. In addition to giving you a venue to showcase creative ways that you learn, open pedagogy activities also help avoid the ‘disposable assignment’ pitfall that so many science activities fall into. Rather than simply submitting an assignment – one that often represents a lot of time and effort to complete – to a learning management system (D2L) dropbox that only your instructor sees, this task is meant to be shared with your classmates (and perhaps your followers on social media) and is destined to live on as a digital artifact on the internet!
Step 1: Decide on a topic
You may pick anything that correlates to our class, so spend some time considering the options and narrowing the focus of your digital artifact. Look back at the modules and lessons to help you decide. For instance, was there a topic that clicked particularly well with you? Conversely, was there a concept you found challenging and needed more of your attention? These are two (but not the only) ways to identify a topic for this part. In your assignment submission form under Part B #1, share your topic along with reasons you selected it.
Step 2: Select your electronic tool
In this step, you will use a website to build a digital artifact that is educationally meaningful. You may wish to focus on learning sites that assist with memorization, like Quizlet and H5P. Or perhaps you wish to express a personal connection to the content by using social media (TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.). Alternatively, you may want to create a biology video contribution in YouTube or generate your own website that covers a concept in our course (see sites dedicated to free website design and content sharing, such as Weebly, WIX, WordPress, Squarespace, Tumblr, Google Sites, TedEd, Prezi, Wikispaces, Storybird, and many others). There are tons of options to create free educational content, so take a moment to consider your goal and skills before deciding on a tool. I suggest selecting a platform or program with which you are already familiar and comfortable. Because of the breadth of media options currently available, it’s likely your instructor will not be able to help you with technical issues or individual instructions, so keep this in mind during the selection process. Note that you will share your work in the discussion as one of your posts, so please make sure it’s something you’re okay with the whole class seeing. For instance, you may not wish to use your personal social media account to build the digital artifact if you are uncomfortable with your instructor and/or classmates potentially viewing the other contributions associated with your account. Also note your full name (based on the one you use for school) must appear somewhere on your work, so that I know that you are the one who created it. If you decide to use a personal social media account with a unique username, you need to show that you are the owner of the account (if for instance, your username is not your real name); if this is not something you’re willing to do, you need to select another tool to build the resource. In your assignment submission form under Part B #2, share the name of the website/program/platform you’re going to use along with reasons you selected it.
A few other items to consider before moving to the next step: Your work must be new and original, so please don’t submit a link to an activity or social media post you made for another course or even a personal contribution made prior to this module. It is important that your study resource is a digital artifact can be accessed by anyone. You will provide the URL link in the assignment submission form and your discussion post. Please avoid the use of copyrighted images and/or plagiarism as these issues will lead to zero credit. You cannot just copy images or information from a Google search, put them into your social media account and submit it as original content. If you plan to use images as part of your resource, the best approach is to do a Creative Commons (CC) search, and use images with Creative Commons licenses. Note you are welcome to use any image from our lessons because they are all obtained under Creative Commons. However, do not be tempted to copy written content from our course lessons (or any other source) since this is plagiarism and will earn zero credit. You may be asked to provide a list of your sources, so please keep track of resources used, if you find inspiration on the web.
Step 3: Build your electronic resource
It’s now time to be creative and create! Be sure to plan in enough time to build your activity, submit the assignment and share it in the discussion board plus fulfill the other post requirements (assuming your schedule has the assignment and discussion due together). If you are in an accelerated class, I highly encourage you to start this step on the first day of the work week, wrap up your build by mid-week and share it in the assignment dropbox and discussion board at least two days before the end of the week as this will give you time to thoroughly participate and benefit from the activity (not to mention avoid the potential stress of using dysfunctional technology at the last minute). If you wait to begin this step on the deadline day, you will likely run out of time or not share quality work; this will lead to lost hours and points. Please start early, be creative and receive the full educational value (plus points) associated with this activity. We in this class and future sessions (and potentially your social media followers) are looking forward to viewing your electronic contributions to cellular biology! Build your digital artifact and in your assignment submission form under Part B #3, copy/paste the URL link of the content you created. Double check that it can be opened and viewed without logging into the site you used to create it.
Step 4: Describe how to use your activity
Provide some brief (or thorough, depending on the complexity of your activity) instructions on how to use your digital artifact as a study resource or simply to further one’s connection to cellular biology. Place this information in your assignment submission form under Part B #4.
Step 5: Reflect on your contributions to the field
In #5 of your assignment submission form, answer the following questions:
• Did you enjoy the digital artifact activity (creating your own resource) and find the process valuable? Why or why not?
• Do you feel that making your own study resources led to enhanced learning and understanding of the topic you selected? Why or why not?
• Do you look forward to sharing your resource with the class through the discussion open pedagogy activity? Why or why not?
• Do you give your instructor and the course coordinator permission to share your resource with others in upcoming classes as part of an ongoing open pedagogy activity? (It’s fine to say no, but I hope you’re willing to share as that’s what makes open education free and valuable to all students regardless of financial aid or income.)
Example of this activity
Below is an example of the digital artifact and open pedagogy processes. Feel free to view the following responses for inspiration, but don’t limit yourself to a memorization activity and reasoning such as this if you’d rather create widespread content using social media. Note my work below connects to an anatomy topic that we briefly covered in Bio156 but more deeply relates to Bio201. Though my example mainly connects with another class, please make sure yours correlates to one of our course topics. Because this is only a reference to view activity requirements, you do not need to do the activity or take a snapshot; these items are included to show a complete example of all steps.
1. I am going to create a study resource that will help learners understand the molecular anatomy of a myofiber, specifically the proteins that give skeletal and cardiac muscular tissue their striated appearance. The reason I’m selecting this topic is that it’s a commonly misunderstood concept, and I want my Bio201 students to show enhanced performance on the practical exam for the muscular system.
2. Because anatomy is best learned by repetition, I am going to create an electronic labeling game using the free content building program called H5P (h5p.org). I will start with open access (non-copyright) images, and build an activity that allows the learner to identify key anatomical structures. Initial responses can be checked against a key to determine correct and incorrect responses, and the activity can be repeated until 100% is reached.
3. Here is my link: Practice muscle protein anatomy here!
4. Here are my instructions: (You need to pretend you’re a Bio201 student who has just finished the module on muscle proteins.) Review the associated lessons, and access the game to review muscle proteins. Drag the names to the appropriate structures indicated by arrows, click the blue “Check” icon at the end, and play it until you earn 100% without using notes or other resources as this is a good way to get the anatomical structures to ‘stick’. Take a snapshot of your final score. Share your snapshot and a few comments about education gained by using this resource.
5. At first, I was super nervous about this assignment because I worried that my colleagues would not find my resource helpful. However, in the end, I really enjoyed the digital artifact build task and look forward to sharing it! One reason is because it forced me to seriously evaluate my anatomical understanding and check my knowledge while creating a valuable study resource. I feel more connected to the material because I took ownership of it. Creating my own study tool definitely led to enhanced learning. In fact, I feel more prepared for this anatomy exam than I have all semester, and I plan to use this create-my-own-tool approach to practice other structures that will be on the test. I definitely look forward to sharing my resource with the class because I spent a lot of time on it and it’s great to know it might help others. Also, I am excited to see what my colleagues created through an open pedagogy process. Yes, you may share my resource now and in the future. I’m thrilled to know that my hard work for this assignment will live on to help a future A&P student and avoid the costly purchase of materials that we can create ourselves!
