In this week’s Strayer Story you learned how Coach Gibbs developed his own leadership style by observing the styles of leaders he admires. Now, think of a great leader in your own life. This can be a coach, teacher, mentor, supervisor, family member, etc. How would you describe that person? What would you say were some of their strengths as a leader? Do you feel as though they are an effective leader? Why or why not? Use references from Leadership That Gets Results (JGR100 ebook) to support your response. Note: As a reminder, students should post twice in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Akima Byfield Hi everyone, A great leader in my life oddly enough was my 9th grade literature teacher’s mother. Ginni treats everyone she cares about with kindness and is compassionately honest. She does a great job at placing herself in other peoples views and can eloquently advocate for herself. Last but not least, she was selfless and would provide a hand to anybody in need of help. Her charisma, capacity to be patient in any circumstance, ability to listen well, and remarkable modesty are just a few of her abilities. Ginni worked in real estate and was totally a leader in the office in which she was employed. I believe she was able to be in this position based on her ability to put herself in other people’s shoes, be a good listener, and resolve issues whenever they arise. She truly had an affiliative leadership style that everyone enjoyed. “The affiliative style’s generally positive impact makes it a good all-weather approach, but leaders should employ it particularly when trying to build team harmony, increase morale, improve communication, or repair broken trust.” (Schwartz & McCarthy, 1)
