The dominant view of conferences among teachers is that they are diagnostic, problem-oriented occasions (Lemmer, 2012, p. 94). Barton et al (2004) states, “Official interactions between parent and teacher, such as the parent-teacher conference, move the shared activity in the direction of the optimal outcome, that is, the academic development of the child.” Lemmer (2012) believes that conferences should be occasions for the affirmation of good performance and a strong tool to strengthen the home-school link. Many schools have standardized forms or formats for parent-teacher conferences, while others leave the planning and content to the teacher.
For this assignment, please create a video/audio presentation using an electronic format; the presentation should be 10–12 minutes long. The presentation can be in Powerpoint format with audio notes/scriipt. Answer and address the following in your presentation:
How would you prepare for the conference? (Tip: please review the Conference Checklist in the textbook.)
In pre-planning for your conference, have you examined demographic data on the family? Or the cultural or ethnic backgrounds of the family? Do you need interpreters? Do you have any specific questions in mind? What are they?
Do both parents or family members work? Have you considered the best time for their attendance?
Describe the setting and location of the meeting.
Note any student work or handouts you will provide.
Conduct an opening period of a parent meeting. Include icebreakers or interest finders you might use. This can be a pretend scriipt if you do not have volunteer “family” to participate in a mock conference.
During the conference, what effective communication strategies would you utilize?
Practice speaking positively. Brainstorm words you would use in rephrasing. For example, what words could you use to describe a child who hands in sloppy work?
