Last Train Home is a 2009 documentary by Lixin Fan which chronicles the human face of the largest mass migration from the countryside to the city in human history. Farming families in China provide the human labor power behind the Chinese economic transformation. From an anthropological perspective, the effects on the Chinese kinship structure associated with long-distance migration are particularly evident. Things I noticed from the film included increasing reliance on the grandparents to maintain the rural community as the parents migrate to the factories for work and the impact of consumerism on adolescent development. These developments associated with capitalism here overlay a collectivist culture with strong Confucian influences. There is a tension here between the fundamental Confucian idea of proper conduct and respect for social hierarchy (li) and the disruptive influence of the money chase upon the new Chinese proletariat.
Following upon the themes of Last Train Home regarding economically forced migration here is a short commercial targeted at Filipino migrant workers’ lives of migrant Filipino workers

It’s interesting to me how the economic pressures of capitalism create social problems, but then offer commodities as a faux solution.
