Learning Goal: I’m working on a business discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.Part 1(a) This is a response to the below discussion post. Please add to the discussion not reiterate what was already said. Must be 200-350 words. Must use websites that are based in the United States. Use in text citations. When being asked how would you lead an organizational culture change without destroying it and those followers in your charge? You might be wondering what is an organizational culture? It is the collection of values as well as expectations and even practices that guide and inform the actions of all team members. For, me to give you a better understanding our book describes three different forms of leadership as well. They are defined as follows: Leadership in organizations is the process of guiding and directing the behavior of people in the work environment. Formal Leadership is officially sanctioned leadership based on the authority of a formal position. Informal leadership is unofficial leadership accorded to a person by members of an organization (Nelson & Quick, 2019). The United States Navy would actually utilize both formal leadership and informal leadership. For instance: Higher officers and even high enlisted personal will fall into a formal leadership position. This is when the individual is officially recognized head of a group or organization. This type of leader is their duty and responsibility to motivate their junior sailors and take charge of the factors that may lead to the success of the organization, which includes resource allocation and even to decision making (Indeed Editorial Team, 2021). Next, you have informal leadership which is when a individual doesn’t have official status as a groups leader, but the other group members see them as and consider them to be a leading force. Again, in the Navy we have people who fill the positions of LPO (Leading Petty Officer) there position is ALPO (Acting Leading Petty Officer). They are respected, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and their actions overall have them committed to excellence to stand out above the others (Jndeed Editorial Team, 2021). Another thing I want to add that tied into our reading is culture. There are several different ethnic backgrounds, we come from all walks of life. The culture change is never an easy task. Different up bringing’s, values, and morals. However, they all have one thing in common when they join the military is they all want to serve. All of these challenges have to be addressed, because they have work together otherwise it could get people killed. The military utilizes their training to break down individuals and build them back up. This is then where one would want to utilize the four p’s. which are as follows people, performance, position, playground and processes and systems. Then we have managing low performers, along with identifying short-term and even long-term strategies. Removing of outdated processes and implementing new systems are essential. Along with thinking and seeing things outsides the box. Utilizing connections with different successful entrepreneurs through innovative strategies helps with organization culture change. Next, you could restructure your leadership team. This helps with change and agile leadership is critical, when it comes to subordinates. Then you would want transparency to give hope and not false promises to those who follow you. If you have false promises it could cause the loss of employees, moral being low, and just not a good work environment (Perucci, D., 2019). Now, lastly as a leader I would want to be opinion minded, a good listener, get my hands dirty and work alongside them at times, ask for opinions, and take their ideas into consideration. We all come from different walks of life, we all have something to give and bring to the table. People will respect you and value you not only as a boss, but they will enjoy working for you. I see it all the time in the Navy with some of my officers. Sometimes, they just come in as an officer, they have never worked the enlisted side. Those officers who ask questions on how things work or run, are more respected than those who don’t. Reference: Perucci, D. (2019). Being in charge of a business or anything were others follow you takes great responsibility. According to Max Weber he stated that, “work lies not in the work itself but in its deeper potential for contributing to a person’s ultimate salvation (page 72).” What Max Weber stated is the key motivation for many people. As a leader I believe anyone can be great in motivating their employees long as they are doing something they love. Anything that is a passion to someone brings out the best in most people. If I love being in Human Resources and helping people, I will always love to help others even if I have to go above and beyond. As someone who becomes a CEO, supervisor or any type of leadership that individual has to be mindful that they are influencing others. If I myself was to take over an organization, I would have to evaluate the entire company itself. I would not want to cause any damage or lose any employees, but sometimes companies fail because they do not have a strong leader that is willing to make tough decisions. As a leader you can make the right choices for the company and also still be very open and supportive to your employees. The influence of someone will affect their behavior, thoughts or mind according to Nelson and Quick. Which is why everyone is not meant to be in a position of power. With myself I am aware that changes happen everyday, life throws many curve balls and we all face adverse situations. Having a understanding of life plays apart of how I would love to run any business, because employees tend to look up to there upper management. If I come to work on time then I am setting an example for my employees to try and be on time. I was taught that its better to be early than late. According to the article of power motivation, key elements needed to motivate someone would be confident, satisfaction of accomplishing goals, maturity and responsibility. These are things that I feel I would be able to practice in my everyday decisions to run the company, but also look for these traits in employees. And if I do not see that someone is trying to improve then I would most definitely make the decision to have a meeting with the person to see what I could do to help them be a better employee. Also Nelson and Quick, leadership grid states the difference leadership results and I have worked under a combination of country club and team management. I would run my business with more of the country club management. Nelson, D. L. & Quick, J. C. (2019). Organizational behavior (6th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage. Must use websites that are based in the United States. Use in text citations. 1) Discuss the problem of workplace abuse of social media, e-mail, instant message, online shopping, and other internet browsing. Should full personal use be allowed? I do not agree with employees having full personal use of the internet on work computers because of the problems that occur with it. While the Internet offers e-mail, e-commerce and research tools, it opens more avenues for employee distraction, ranging from the innocent—entertainment and shopping—to the offensive, such as gambling and pornography. As a result, personal web use amongst employees results in both lost productivity and other serious problems, such as workplace lawsuits. Additionally, Websense, Inc. reported that workplace Internet misuse costs U.S. businesses $63 billion in lost productivity annually (Patrick, 2022). (2) Are computers with internet access similar to other equipment such as telephones? I believe that computers with internet access is similar to other equipment such as the telephone. Businesses record conversations on the telephone for a variety of reasons, including, for training purposes, customer service, ensuring regulatory compliance, and other legal reasons (Datko, 2019). Thus, employers can equip work computers with a variety of monitoring devices to ensure employees are using the internet for business purposes and not personal use. (3) Should employees be allowed to access the internet for personal use as long as they limit it to their own mobile devices? I believe employees should not be allowed to access the internet for personal use on their own mobile devices because of productivity issues and surfing inappropriate web sites. Employees that are eager to check their social media site all day on their personal mobile device are not productive employees (McNulty, 2022). The employee’s thoughts are never on the task at hand instead they are thinking about “What’s going on in Facebook/Twitter/Tik Tok/Instagram land.” Additionally, employees may engage in surfing inappropriate sites while at work on their personal mobile device and another employee who sees it may get offended, thus causing legal issues for the company. (4) Should management be allowed to monitor all internet use? I believe it is not management’s job to monitor employee’s internet use. Management may not be qualified to understand the dynamics that come with monitoring internet usage. This job should be given to the company’s information technology (IT) department. The IT department can monitor suspicious trends on an employee’s internet usage and contact management. (5) Should employees be warned if internet activities including e-mailed are to be monitored? I believe it is the employer’s responsibility to establish an internet usage policy. An internet usage policy provides employees with rules and guidelines about the appropriate use of company equipment, network and internet access (GFI, 2022). (6) What reasons can you give to support an internet crackdown by management? The reasons to support internet crackdown by management is to ensure they employees are working there task at hand and not surfing the internet, to provide evidence if there is a lawsuit that involves the employee and/or the business, and to prevent unauthorized software from being download to the company’s computer. (7) What reasons can you give to oppose a crackdown? Employees deserve some type of access to the internet, as long as they understand and have signed the company’s IT policies, to ease stress. Please add to the discussion not reiterate what was already said. Must be 100-350 words. Must use websites that are based in the United States. Use in text citations. Discuss the problem of workplace abuse of social media, email, instant messaging, online shopping, and other internet browsing. Should personal use be allowed (Guffey & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? We are monitored every time we use the government computer or cell phone in the military. We must also sign paperwork and take training courses that discuss where we can and cannot go on the government computers and cell phones. Some sites are blocked, but Facebook and Instagram are not blocked. Some personnel do online shopping and even have items delivered to their command. As a department manager, I do not see an issue with employees using the government computers to be on social media, do banking, or shop. IF an employee is allowed to take breaks to smoke or go for a walk, then allowing those employees to use the computer for social media or shopping would be no different. In an article written by Kelsey Casselbury, social media will enable employees to take a short break and improve productivity (Casselberry, 2018). Are computers with internet access similar to other equipment such as telephones (Guffey, & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? Computers with internet access are considered equipment owned by the organization. Equipment includes vehicles, computers, telephones, and many other items (Murray, 2021). Of course, Murray is stating that it is considered equipment for tax purposes, but companies must pay taxes, and if they sold their computers, it would count as a profit and, therefore, be taxed. For that reason, I would defiantly say that computers are equipment. We must inventory all equipment signed out to us at my job, and computers are on that list. Should employees be allowed to access the internet for personal use as long as they limit it to their own mobile device (Guffey & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? Employees should not be allowed to access company internet with their personal devices. I agree that the employee may use the internet on a company’s computer but allowing employees internet access on their personal devices would be unwise. Because it is an employee’s personal device, there is no telling what that employee may be using the internet to accomplish. Because the company is paying for it, it should only be used on company equipment. Should management be allowed to monitor all internet use (Guffey & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? I do not believe that management should be allowed to monitor all internet use because a select department should do it. If the company has an IT department, then that is the department that should be monitoring all internet access. I am considered a manager, and I cannot monitor anyone’s internet access. Even our Commanding Office does not have access to monitor everyone’s internet access. Still, the Commanding Officer does have a department that he can have to give him updates on the status of the internet use within the command. I believe businesses should run similarly. I would also have them run everything through legal. Should employees be warned if internet activities, including email, are to be monitored (Guffey & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? Employees should sign documents on what they can and cannot do on company computers. Another document that should be signed is that internet access and emails sent and used on the company’s internet are subject to monitoring. In an article in Chron, 74% of companies monitor employees’ use of the Internet (Nestor-Harper. n.d.). Since monitoring is done, it is only fitting that employees know it happens. Also, if something terrible were to happen, it may be harder for an employer to fire an employee who did not know what they could or could not do on the company’s internet and that it is monitored. What reasons can you give to oppose a crackdown (Guffey & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? Because there are internet hazards out there like Ransomware, the internet must be monitored for possible breaches that could harm the company and cause the loss of personal information, accounts, and other unforeseen events. Knowing that even with internet security, each and every employee must do their part to ensure the security of the company’s internet. What reasons can you give to oppose the crackdown (Guffey & Loewy, 2019, pg. 149)? In all honesty, I cannot give a valid reason for opposing a crackdown. A lot of personal information is stored on computers, and a breach of a company’s internet could expose all of it and cause millions of dollars in damages. Internet security is a top priority and must consistently be enforced. References Casselbury, K. (2018, June 28). The Impact of Social Media in the Workplace Pros and Cons. Chron. (chron.com) Part 3 For this assignment, you will participate in a synchronous panel discussion during which you will present and discuss the application or integration of a leadership theory or concept related to leadership, power, influence, or motivation. This is an Oral Presentation (as if you are giving a speech) and thus no PowerPoint. You will present a 5-7 minute presentation on the foundation and tenets of your chosen theory as if you are giving an expert synopsis on the topic. Make sure to reference citations in your presentation (for example, “Hoftestede developed 8 cultural dimensions which entail…”) Then you will take questions from the audience during the panel format. I would write about 1000-1500 words. And Ill just read it on video.
