Learning Goal: I’m working on a astronomy project and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Project Description
Make two scale models, one of the local group of galaxies and the other of the 10 closest stars to the Sun.
Make a model of the Solar Neighborhood. Choose the 10 closest stars to the Sun. Using these 10 stars, you will create a scale model of the Solar Neighborhood. Choose a location on Google Maps to be the location of the Sun. Next, mark the positions of the closest stars on
Google Maps as well using an appropriate scale that ensures the most distant star is still on the map of the Earth. Assume that the stars are all in a line, this makes it easier to see the differences in distance. After marking all of the positions on Google maps, submit either a link to the map or a clearly legible screenshot of it.
Make a model of the Local Group of galaxies. Choose the 10 most massive or luminous members of the local group (not including the Milky Way). Using these 10 members, you will create a scale model of the local group. Choose a location on Google Maps to be the location of the Milky Way. Next, mark the positions of your selected 10 local group members on Google Maps as well using an appropriate scale that ensures the most distant member is still on the map of the Earth. Put all of the galaxies in a line, to better show the the distances. After marking all of the positions on Google maps, submit either a link to the map or a clearly legible screenshot of it.
Along with your maps representing models of the local group and solar neighborhood, you must also clearly include the scale you used as well as the distances to each of the objects in reality and on your map.
What to Include in you Project Submission
Include either a link to the two Google maps or a clearly legible screen shot of the Google Map (see the acceptable formats section for what image formats used).
Include the scales used.
Include a table, for each model, that includes the real world distances and distances in your scale models. Sample calculation for how you calculate the scaled distance, for each model.
The reflection Questions.
Reflection Questions (maximum 500 Words)
The distance to the nearest galaxy of a similar size to the Milky way (the Andromeda galaxy) is 13.8 times the size of the Milky Way. The distance to the nearest star from the Sun is about 1000 times the size of the solar system. What can you say about the space between star systems in the Milky Way (interstellar space) as compared to the space between galaxies in the local group (intergalactic space). The fastest space probe built so far is the Parker solar probe which will have a top speed of about 700,000 km/h (0.00065 times the speed of light). If we built a space ship that traveled at the same speed how long would it take to reach the nearest star, how about the nearest galaxy? With our current technology is it feasible to send humans to other stars or galaxies? If you were to do this project again, what would you change to either make it easier or better.
