Learning Goal: I’m working on a english multi-part question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn. There are four steps to your discussion post for this week.Read “Fictional Feeling: Philosophy, Cognitive Science, and the American Gothic” by James Dawes (posted in the Week 1 module). I have posted two versions; the second one has some highlighting that I have made on the article. Pay particular attention to his introduction and conclusion.
Consider Dawes’s claims about gothic fiction. He asks important questions relevant to this course such as:
Why read horror? Why seek aversive stimuli? (461). In other words, why do we read fiction that we know will upset us?
How can we be made to fear a fiction, to experience trepidation in the face of a danger not real, encountered and even courted precisely because it is not real, because it bears no consequences? How does the fictional spill over into the actual, the ‘‘near’’? (439)
Why do we seek stimuli that we avoid? How do fictional characters acquire existence in the real world? What are we feeling when we feel fear but are not afraid? (439)
By Thursday post a response in the discussion in which you state whether you agree or disagree with Dawes. Make specific references to Dawes’s claims and then use any of the stories in Week 1 to support your position. Explain why you think people read gothic fiction.
