Mental Health in the News
Justification: In  Jon Oliver asserted that the public’s perception of mental illness is often determined by limited and/or flawed representations in the news.  supports these assertions with more examples. As we are seeking to analyze the narrative surrounding mental illness, it is important to analyze how the news actually covers mental illness. Are they, in fact, misrepresenting or disrespecting those who suffer from mental illness, or do they cover issues surrounding mental illness in a respectful and comprehensive manner?
Description: For this essay, you will be asked to analyze at least two (2) articles that cover some component of mental healthcare (but NOT mental healthcare, in general). These articles should be significant in length (at least 750-1000 words). If you would like to analyze other texts (such as podcasts, YouTube news channels, television news segments, etc.), that would be fine, as well. Just make sure they are of significant length.
***These articles/news sources should not represent experts in the field of mental healthcare. You are being asked to analyze the mental health narrative as presented in popular news outlets; as such, avoid publications that cater to experts in the field or parties heavily invested in mental health.
Scope: To ensure your overriding analysis/argument is somewhat unified in its focus, you should find texts that both focus on the same element of mental healthcare. For example, you could find two articles that deal with suicide, two articles that deal with anxiety, two articles that deal with schizophrenia, etc. This will allow you to make an assertion about the representation of a specific element of mental healthcare, as opposed to making a broad generalization about the the coverage of mental healthcare, as a whole.
Prompts/Questions Answered: Use the following prompts as the basis for your analysis:
Framing— How are they framing individuals living with these mental health conditions? Do they use any phrases that frame them in a negative light? Do they frame them as sufferers or as individuals living with these conditions? Do you feel as though this terminology is respectful? Really pay attention to the language they use to frame the issue.
Problems— Are they attributing problems within the mental health community to a certain thing? What do they seem to identify as the catalyst for this issue? Do they attribute the rise or decrease of a mental health trend to something?
Inspiration— What is the inspiration for this discussion? Basically, what inspired the publication to cover this issue? Was it inspired by a violent act caused by someone who might have had a mental health issue, a new bill that addresses mental health, a celebrity that addresses mental health issues, etc.?
Focus— On what do they primarily focus? For example, if the article was inspired by a recent healthcare bill, are they focusing on the bill itself or on the reactions surrounding the bill?
Ethos/Authority–Who are they allowing to speak? As we addressed in class, it is perceived that the voices of individuals with mental conditions are often silenced. Do we actually hear from these individuals or are those surrounding these individuals doing all the talking?
Agenda— What do you think is the publication’s agenda? What do they want to come from this article?
Verification/Outside Source–How well does the source represent the truth associated with this condition? I am willing to consider the two news sources as two of your sources, but you will be required to find another source either validates/verifies the information presented or opposes/complicates what is presented in the news sources.
Thesis: After you have analyzed these articles, you should arrive at a unified thesis about the coverage of this component of mental healthcare. It should basically answer the following question: Based on these articles, do you feel as though the coverage of this element is effective?
By the way, I fully acknowledge that making an assertion about the news based on two articles is inherently a hasty generalization, but it would be too much to require to you to provide substantial analysis of every article available.
