My professor asks the questions: Why are Hadza livelihoods so important for
understanding human diversity? Is it because they are “remnants of the human past”? (The answer to that question is NO, because Hadza are as MODERN as YOU). Is it because they live in a small “primitive” society? (The answer to that question is NO, because Hadza
society is not small and not primitive). Is it because Hadza are “natural conservationists”
who live “lightly on the land” (The answer to that question is NO, because while Hadza
have deep reverence for their homelands, and are heavily involved in trying to conserve
them, they are NOT the “natural custodians of nature”, any more so than YOU are).
In this essay, my professor specifically asks: so why is a deeper understanding of Hadza
livelihoods important? For example, why is a deeper understanding of Indigenous
ecological science and traditional ecological practice important? Or, why is a deeper
understanding of egalitarian material economic relationships (common among foragers)
important? This essay needs to provide the relveant material from class. In particular the
reading of Lee (1969) Eating Christmas in the Kalahari (this reading is uploaded in the files) and the film The Hadza: Last of the First:
