n the recent months and years, we have been publicly questioning the existence of statues to white supremacy – those of enslavers, Confederate generals, segregationists, etc. Let’s pretend that a commission is seeking to replace three such monuments with “unsung heroes” of the civil rights and racial justice struggles throughout our country’s history, and they have asked you to design new monuments commemorating them. Which three people that you learned about this semester would you choose, and why? How did learning this person’s story change your perspective? And why should the public care? Your answer should include your understanding of this person’s significance to civil rights and racial justice history – the more you show you understand this person’s significance, the better!
NOTE: “Unsung” means not currently widely celebrated or recognized. I would say people like Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are off-limits for this assignment. Go back and think about who you found interesting and important, perhaps people you never heard of or considered before taking this class.
