Natural Selection in Birds
This is an adaptation from an online lab. This lab is to be completed individually NOT in groups as
indicated in the prompts. Please only answer the questions stated here and NOT all the questions in the
simulation.
In this simulation you will investigate populations of birds living on an island. You will begin by selecting
traits for three bird species that live in the southwest portion of the island. You will explore how this
population changes over time in the southwest. Then you will explore how the populations evolve over
long time periods in various environments on other areas on the island.
The simulation can be found at the link below. Please answer the 6 questions listed below. Please
answer in complete sentences with proper grammar.

PART 1: NATURAL SELECTION
Create your 3 species of birds with a variety of traits. (i.e. Don’t make them all the same.) Then answer
question 1.
1. How will your 3 birds do in these habitats and why? Be sure to refer to specific traits in your
answer. (1.5 pt.)
The simulation will pause every 50 000 years and present updates on your birds. Run the simulation for
the first 50 000 years and answer question 2.
2. After 50 000 years update the status of your birds. Include the new population numbers and any changes, mutations or extinctions for each species. (1 pt.)
Now continue to watch how your birds change over time. Allow the simulation to run for 500 000 years
and answer question 3.
3. At the end of the 500 000 years briefly describe how each of your bird species has changed
compared to the starting species. (1.5 pt.)
PART 2: HURRICANE
In this part of the simulation your birds are blown into 3 new habitats by a hurricane. One of the new
habitat types is customized by you. Follow the instructions to create whatever habitat you like. Then
answer question 4. It’s okay if some of your bird species went extinct in the first part. The simulation will
fill in the missing species.
4. How will your 3 birds do in these habitats and why? Be sure to refer to specific traits in your answer
Now run the simulation again for the next 500 000 years and watch how your bird species change in
these new environments.
5. For each species explain WHAT has changed and WHY it changed. Discuss each species individually
(1-2 sentences for each species) and refer to specific traits in your answer. (2.5 pts.)A correct answer will need to include all 3 species.
6. Include a photo/screenshot of the final screen of the simulation that shows the original birds, birds
at 500 000 and 3 populations at 1 000 000. (1 p
