One example of a previous pandemic is the plague The plague is a disease caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. This bacteria is spread by fleas. It causes flu symptoms. The Black Death was a plague that caused approximately 50 million deaths in 1317.
A second example of a pandemic that occurred in the past is the Spanish Influenza. This influenza is caused by the A/H3N8 virus. It is notorious for its incredibly rapid spread and how quickly it was defined as a pandemic. This pandemic was far more recent than the Black Death plague, as it first emerged throughout the world in 1918

Antonine Plague (165-180 AD): This plague is often referred to as the plague of Galen and was the first known pandemic to impact the Roman Empire. The location of start is not exactly known, however it is believed to have emerged in China and spread through the Silk Road by trading ships, which were in contact with the Roman military. Speculations have led scholars to believe this plague was smallpox, however there is some concern that measles was the plague. Galen and Celsus, herbalist and physician, were active in the fight against the Antonine plague. Methods of treatment included inoculation and even primitive surgery, such as cautery. For those who could not afford professional medical care (the majority), prayer, amulets, and home remedies were the only options.
The Spanish Flu (1918-1919): This is often referred to as the 1918 Flu Pandemic and caused by “an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin.” The origin of this virus is still unknown to this day, however it infected about one third of the world’s population. This was first identified in the United States in the spring of 1918 in military personnel. With no vaccine readily available, efforts were to control included non-pharmaceutical interventions. Namely, isolation/quarantine, emphasis on hygiene (hand washing/sanitizing), limiting personal contact, and gatherings.
