Prompt: How do paradox, irony, ambiguity, and/or tension work in the text? Again, focus; don’t try to tackle too many elements of fiction in this short essay.
– The paper can be 3 to 4 pages. Only use Giovanni’s Room for evidence. Just cite the page number.
Instructions:
Include a title that reveals or at least offers a hint of the topic and entices the reader. Your title should not be something like “Literary Analysis of Giovanni’s Room.” Get more creative than that.
Tell the reader in the first paragraph which novel you’re analyzing and who the author is. Also make your point (thesis) clear in that introduction. You can frame a thesis as a question, which your essay will answer, or as a declarative sentence. Remember that a strong thesis statement should be specific and detailed so that it reveals your perspective, and like any good argument, your perspective must be debatable—not obvious or shallow or general.
Stay focused on your purpose. The expectations that you raise in the introduction should be realized in the body and come to a logical conclusion at the end. Don’t write about things that don’t have a direct relationship to the focus and perspective of your essay. Develop points and support them with details and quotes from the novel. Stay away from clichés and generalities.
Only include plot summaries to introduce the novel (very, very briefly) and illuminate/provide context to your points. No huge chunks of plot summary. Recaps are a means to an end, not an end in itself.
Use quotation marks to enclose whatever you quote from the novel. Use the MLA style of documentation. Do not include a works cited page for this assignment since you are using only one source—the novel. In order to receive a passing grade for this assignment, you must include quotes and internal citations. You only need to include the page numbers on which you found the quotes in your citations.
Include a conclusion that reiterates the point of the essay, synthesizes the details you discussed, and explains the importance of your perspective. Don’t raise new issues in the conclusion, but do leave the reader with something to think about.
Divide essay into paragraphs. A paragraph is a unit of meaning that tells the reader that the ideas in that passage go together. When you shift focus in one paragraph, start a new one. Indent paragraphs and don’t add extra lines of space between them.
Double-space text. Use 12-point black Times New Roman, Cambria, or Arial font and 1” margins.
First page heading only: 1” from top, left-hand corner, double-spaced—your name, instructor’s name, course name, date. All other page headings: 1/2” from top, right-hand corner—your name and page number (Example: Jones 2).
