The goal of the final paper is to provide practice defining and using art vocabulary; writing a formal critique about a work of art using the Formal Elements (light, color, space, etc.) and Principles of Design (emphasis, scale, pattern, etc.). The paper should be at least 600-1000 words words. Pick one work of art made by one artist and use 5 vocabulary words within your entire essay. When using the vocabulary word:
-Underline the vocabulary word
-Define the vocabulary word
-Explain how it relates to your selected artwork
-Explain where/how the vocabulary word is located in the work of art
The Project is worth 20 points. You will earn points for each relevant art vocabulary word that you use, define, and discuss correctly. You will not earn full credit for a term that does not have a definition or a discussion of how the term relates to the work of art. (I will only grade the first 5 terms, therefore selected them well)
Choose a work of art from the list (TOPIC SIGN-UP Final Paper) link located in the D2L Content menu.
FIRST Introduce the work, make sure to include:
– Artist’s name, “title of the work”, Year it was made, Medium (what the art is made out of: oil on canvas?, watercolor?, paper? cloth? digital?), Size of the work in inches for example 30 x 40″ (if digital, leave blank)
Discuss the motivation and function of artwork you are writing about.
Include an image at the top of the paper or a link to the work of art you are writing about. (make sure to properly label the artwork under the image as well as define it in your paper)
When using the vocabulary word, you must underline it, define your terms, and explain how it relates to your selected artwork. You will not earn full credit if you do not include a definition for each of the vocabulary terms that you use. Also, discuss how the term is relevant to the work of art and explain where/how it is located in the work of art.
Example: Pattern is used in “Triumphal Entry.” (This would not earn credit because it did not provide a definition for pattern or explain how it is used in the work of art.)
“Triumphal Entry” incorporates the formal element of pattern in that it repeats the same floral elements throughout the design. (This would earn credit because it states a relevant formal element and defines what that formal element is.) Pattern creates visual interest by supplying the viewer a visual path to follow.
Use Standard American English including proper punctuation, grammar and capitalization. Also, please do not copy definitions from any sources. Use your own words to demonstrate your knowledge of the vocabulary. You should not need to cite any sources. ***QUALITY OVER QUANTITY***
