Required Video: lecture on Liberation Theology
This recording is from a previous class. Please diregard the beginning announcements. Start at 5:07 minutes – summary on the Christian teaching on love then moves into how this love must be enacted in society – that’s the beginning of the introduction to Christian liberation theology.
Elizabeth Johnson, “Liberation Christology,” in Consider Jesus: Waves of Renewal in Christology (e-book).
Jon Sobrino, “Awakening from the Sleep of Inhumanity” in The Principle of Mercy: Taking the Crucified People from the Cross, pp. 1-11.
re-read: Thich Nhat Hanh, “Chapter SIX: A Peaceful Heart,” in Living Buddha, Living Christ, 74-86.
Leo Lefebure, “Separation and Death,” in The Buddha and the Christ: Explorations in Buddhist and Christian Dialogue pp. 47-52.
The title of Sobrino’s article is “Awakening from the Sleep of Inhumanity” as his reflections of his experience in El Salvador, as he explains, radically changed his questions and the answers to his questions. He states that, “[t]he basic question came to be: Are we really human and, if we are believers, is our faith human?” (p. 3)
– In light of his first question, “are we really human?,” how does he describe our humanity (including our inhumanity and what can awaken us from it)? then give a short summary of key explanations of the Judeo-Christian understanding of the human condition, then explain what Sobrino adds to that understanding of humanity. Make sure to cite passages from the readings in order to support your explanations. ½-¾ page
– In light of his second question, “Is the Christian faith human?,” choose ONE of the following Christian teachings: (1) God and faith in God, (2) love and mercy, OR (3) sin. Explain Sobrino’s critique and/or interpretation of that teaching, in light of the method of liberation theology. If you choose the option of “love and mercy,” include an explanation of the principle of mercy (and how it differs from “works of mercy.” Make sure to cite passages from the readings in order to support your explanations. ½ -¾ page
