Guide Questions:
The title of Sobrino’s article is “Awakening from the Sleep of Inhumanity” as his reflections of his experience in El Salvador, as he explains, radically changed his questions and the answers to his questions. He states that, “[t]he basic question came to be: Are we really human and, if we are believers, is our faith human?” (p. 3)
– In light of his first question, “are we really human?,” how does he describe our humanity (including our inhumanity and what can awaken us from it)? then give a short summary of key explanations of the Judeo-Christian understanding of the human condition, then explain what Sobrino adds to that understanding of humanity. Make sure to cite passages from the readings in order to support your explanations. ½-¾ page
– In light of his second question, “Is the Christian faith human?,” choose ONE of the following Christian teachings: (1) God and faith in God, (2) love and mercy, OR (3) sin. Explain Sobrino’s critique and/or interpretation of that teaching, in light of the method of liberation theology.
