Throughout the semester, you will be evaluating your diet for both calorie and nutrient intake to assess your overall nutrition. In the first assignment, you will use the Dietary Log to track your diet for three (3) days. Click this link to open the assignment: “Dietary Log” This food journal will be used for the remaining Dietary Analysis Project assignments throughout the semester, so be sure to save a copy of the file that you can add to for each part of the project. The analysis is based on your average intake, so choose three unique days to record throughout the week. There may be duplicate items, but none of the days should be nearly identical. If you have any questions about what is acceptable for the project, do not hesitate to contact me before you complete the assignment. Detailed instructions are included in the document.
Food portions are one of the most commonly underestimated errors in the food log. Use this quick reference to estimate your actual portion size when recording meals in your dietary log.
For this assignment, please use this Food Composition Table (click to open link) to locate and calculate the nutrition information for your dietary log. For the best experience viewing the Food Composition Table, I suggest you use Two-Page view. This can be done by opening the Food Composition Table in Adobe Reader (not in a browser tab), selecting View from the menu at the top of the screen, clicking on Page Display from the dropdown menu, and then selecting Two-Page view. This will allow you to see the full list of nutrition information for each item on one screen.
Note: Before beginning this assignment, be sure that you have Adobe Reader (free software) installed on your computer. Your web browser may be configured with an Adobe Reader plug-in to automatically open the file within your browser’s window when accessed; however, accessing the PDF in your browser will limit your ability to search through the document. If you open the Food Composition Table in Adobe Reader, you can click the magnifying glass icon in the upper left corner to search for key words throughout the document. This will make finding information about specific foods much easier.
