Purpose:
Emulate—be inspired by—one of the photographers listed below. You will take a photograph in the style of your chosen artist and present it in the Discussion group along with a short essay about the artist and your process. Your essay must be in your own words. You must cite your sources.
Knowledge:
· Study the history of photography and learn about different photography practices.
· Recognize how an artists’ life experiences and interests can affect their art work.
· Get a sense of how it feels to take a photograph in the vein of your chosen artist.
Skills:
· Dissect how an artist created their artwork. Take it apart starting with a formal analysis then move on to process.
· Strive to be inspired by the artists process and subject matter.
· Isolate the important aspects of a person’s biography.
o Decide what is common knowledge, and what needs to be cited. Correctly Cite your resources.
· Support your peers through critique. Bring something new to the conversation.
Tasks:
Part I (40 pts) ESSAY & PHOTOGRAPH
· You must focus on one of the nine selected artists from Chapter 2.05 and Section 4. See list at the end of the assignment, and images posted in n iCollege under this assignment. In 300+ words, tell us which artist you are responding to and describe their work.
· Correctly use vocabulary terms that can be found in Chapter 2.8
· Summarize the photographic process they used. Are they a studio artist, a portrait photographer, capturing a moment, a photojournalist? Are they a storyteller? Experimental? Correctly documenting a time in history? Are they promoting fake news?
What is the meaning behind their photographs? Through what method(s) of analysis did you examine the artist’s work to better understand it? Biographical? Contextual? Feminist?
How did your own photograph come into being?
How do you connect your photograph with the artist you are inspired by/emulating?
