_____________
“Tableau vivant” means “living picture” and refers to people dressing up and staging themselves as the figures in a painting. For this assignment, you will recreate a 19th-century European work of art with a twist, updating it to reflect present-day concerns that are important to you. You can work individually or in groups for this assignment.
Begin by selecting a work of art that interests you and that is feasible for this project. If you are working alone, you might select a single-figure composition (a portrait, for example), whereas if you are working in a group, you might choose a larger, multi-figure composition. Spend time closely examining the iconography and formal qualities of your selected work, thinking about its historical context and what messages it conveys. It may say something about power relationships, values, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, politics, fashion … the list goes on. You will need to look at some scholarship to make sure you understand how the work functioned and signified in its original context.
Next think about how you could update the work of art for today, critiquing or reinforcing its messaging – engaging with it in some way. Consider how to reenact the work with your update in mind, taking into account pose, posture, choreography, costume, setting, lighting, degree of illusionism, etc. The idea is not to create something identical to the original, but to selectively transform the work to make it relevant to your experience. The finished product should be recognisable as derived from and engaging with the original work of art.
Take a photograph (or have a photograph taken by a friend) of you reenacting the work. You may use photoshop to tweak your image but that is not a requirement.
The goals of this assignment are for you to think about how works of art convey meaning and to engage critically and creatively with a work of European 19th-century art. This experiential learning assignment should (hopefully!) be fun and illuminating.
Submit a jpeg image and a write-up describing your inspiration, process, and choices. Briefly describe the meaning and context of the original work, then discuss your transformations and connect them to the contemporary context and your identity and concerns, differentiating them from the historical context and identities of the artist, sitter(s), or viewers of the original work of art. People working in a group can submit the same jpeg but each person must submit a different write-up highlighting their individual research and conceptual contribution to the project; people working in groups must also list the other group members at the top of their write-up.
Note: Whatever you decide to do, please be respectful and aware of the sensitivities that representations of identities entail. No black-, brown-, or yellow-face, etc.
Make sure all sources are properly cited in your write-up, using footnotes rather than parenthetical citations: Chicago Manual of Style Quick Guide
I will do the picture, but first you need to pick a work and ill ask the prof if im allowed to do the one you picked. So you need to pick one as soon as possible.
