The assignment is a summary of the attached article. The summary must answer these questions:
1. Read the abstract. In your own words, summarize the main findings of the study and their importance for conservation of terrestrial biomes under climate change.
2. Read the introduction. What are the hypotheses tested by the researchers? (Hint: although not stated explicitly as hypotheses, they are implicitly provided in the last paragraph of the introduction).
3. Examine Figure 1 and read its accompanying caption. Panels A and B show the global land area currently found in different regions of climate space (different combinations of average annual temperature and average precipitation), with Panel A showing all land area and Panel B showing protected land area only (warmer colors mean more land area). Panel C shows the proportion of different regions of climate space found in protected areas (warmer colors mean a higher proportion). Panels D–F are the same as A–C, but for projected future climate change. Panels G and H show the projected changes in total land area (G) and protected land area (H) in different regions of climate space between the current and future climates (blue means a decrease in land area in that climate region under climate change, red means an increase). Panels J and K show areas of climate space, in terms of total land area (J) and protected land area (K), color-coded according to whether that region of climate space is lost (no longer exists under future climate change; shown in red), novel (is a region of climate space that did not exist in the current climate but does exist under future climate change; shown in blue), retained (has the same land area under future climate change as it has in the current climate; shown in green), or declining (has less land area under future climate change as it has in the current climate; shown in purple). Panels I and L show projected changes in area protected over temperature (I) and precipitation (L) gradients. Based on the diagram, which relative regions of climate space (e.g., hotter, colder, wetter, dryer) are expected to experience the greatest losses in total land area under future climate change and why? Which are expected to experience the greatest increases in the land area of novel regions of climate space and why? What is the difference between the changes in climate space for all land areas (J) and protected areas only (K), and what explains this difference?
4. Examine Figure 4 and read its accompanying caption. Part A shows a map of the current distribution of global terrestrial biomes. Part B shows the expected total loss of protected land area in each biome under climate change. Part C shows the same thing, except as a proportion of the current protected land area in each biome. Based on the figure, which three biomes are expected to lose the most total protected land area under climate change? Which three biomes are expected to lose the greatest proportion of their protected land area under climate change?
5. Read the discussion. What is the relationship between climate change, global terrestrial biomes, and biodiversity protection? How could the results of this study help governments make decisions about which areas to protect to conserve biodiversity under climate change?
