Instead, consider the following examples of suitable responses: A link to and a summary of an external news story, trade journal article, or academic paper related to the material. A well-formulated question that spurs discussion. (i.e., ‘What does x mean?’ is not appropriate, but ‘I don’t agree with x, because I’ve found that y tends to be true. What would be a better approach?’ would be closer to appropriate.) A detailed professional anecdote tying in the material from the chapter from experiences at work or from the industry that support or contradict the position of the text. A connection to material from a different chapter and how they reinforce or counter each other; a connection to material from a different class you have taken or are taking; or of particular merit, how the material in the chapter relates to what your other professors have said in class. A particular insight that takes one or more concepts from the text and then goes further, extrapolating on what that might mean in general or in a specific situation. Responses to others’ points (politely) contradicting them or extending their lines of reasoning into different contexts. Again, there may be a small amount of summary from the text to give everyone context, but the entire post should not be summary. Grading is based on the introduction of added contribution, rather than word count. However, 50 words is probably way too short and 500 words is probably way too long. Also, note that these grades are marked as ‘complete/incomplete’. That means that in the gradebook they don’t always show up as a number. As an aside: I tend not to comment on these frequently. I am reading what you write, but through a different screen which does not allow me to publicly respond. This falls in line with my preference to see student interaction, as I’ve noticed that responses to individual posts disappear once I’ve posted a discussion post on them.
