T‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍he film Out in the Night highlights a criminal case against a group of lesbian and queer women of color in 2006. The film covers the experience that led to them facing criminal charges as well as their experiences in the legal and corrections systems. While the women’s race influenced their experiences, the case exemplifies how race, gender, sexual orientation, and social class all played a role in how the women’s case was handled and how they were treated by the criminal justice system. You should summarize some of the major points of the film and make connections where you can some of the material that has been covered in class or in the assigned books (e.g., institutional racism, racial identity development model, Black Like Me, the essays in the Are We Born Racist? book, etc). You do not have to mention every class concept that connects with the film; I’d rather you pick 1 or 2 and explain those connections clearly. You should also write about your reactions to the film. Some questions1 you may want to consider: 1. Do you think this story would have unfolded differently had the young women been gender conforming? How about white? Or wealthy? Or male? 2. Defense attorney Susan Tipograph explains that even when the law considers the legitimacy of a claim of self-defense, it “doesn’t address the trauma that women, that black women, that differently gendered people experience on the street all the time. And what effect that cumulatively has.” What is the cumulative effect and do you think the courts should take it into account? 3. What did you learn from the film about the ways in which racism, sexi‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍sm, homophobia, and class-based prejudices intersect? How is life different for people who are members of none or just one of the targeted groups compared with people whose identity includes all of them? 4. Commenting on the murder of Sakia Gunn, another young lesbian from Newark, activist Glo Ross says, “It’s really about the system of policing to make it basically an arrestable offense to be queer, to be of color. You’re guilty just by having an identity.” Where do you see evidence that would support that statement? The questions I have presented here are just guidelines. You DO NOT have to respond to each one. I want to hear what YOU thought after watching the film and how YOU think it relates to other concepts we have talked about this semester. If there are still questions you have after watching the film, you are welcome to include those as well. [PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE MOVIE BUT I WILL ATTACH A GOOGLE SEARCH WHERE YOU CAN READ THE SUMMARIES FROM DIFFERENT WEBSITES SO THAT YOU GET AN IDEA ON WHAT THIS IS ABOUT AND SEE THE TRAILERS/CLIPS, ALSO THE TEXTBOOK WILL BE ATTACHED WHERE YOU WILL FIND WHAT WAS COVERED & ASSIGNED IN CLASS] https://www.google.com/search?q=out+in+the+night+documentary+full+summary&sxsrf=APq-WBs2ishjsuN_YGByXG6J1OiTnzrTYg%3A1650223572236&ei=1GlcYqGFDtSqtQbln5iQCg&ved=0ahUKEwihv8ru6Zv3AhVUVc0KHeUPBqIQ4dUDCA4&uact=5&oq=out+in+the+night+documentary+full+summary&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsAMyBwgAEEcQsANKBAhBGABKBAhGGABQAFgAYOYEaAFwAXgAgAEAiAEAkgEAmAEAyAEIwAE‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍B&sclient=gws-wiz
