I‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ have attached the rubric. There is a typo in the rubric. It says units 3 and 4 but it is units 5 AND 6. What we have been learning is: Unit 5: Statues of five men waiting in line for bread during the Great Depression. In Unit 5, we will focus on the prosperous times of the 1920s, known as the Roaring 20s, and the destitute era of the 1930s, known as the Great Depression. These two decades show the United States at its highest high and lowest low. Following the Great War, the United States will enter a time of increased consumer spending, leisure time, and new cultural norms. Economically, the United States boomed! Corporations drew in huge profits, stock markets soared, and people enjoyed spending money. As a result, pro-business leaders dominated the political market, making decisions that kept corporations happy. The 1920s were a time of change, changing lifestyles, changing habits, and a changing demographic, as immigrants continued to find new hope in America. As the 1920s continued to roar and the populous continued to overindulge, glaring weaknesses penetrated the perceived economic and social stronghold. The agricultural market was facing overproduction which led to dropping prices, dropping profits, an economic tailspin for farmers, speculation of the stock market and overextension of credit created an unstable economic base. With these weaknesses unaddressed, they would eventually lead to the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. National leadership, having taken a back seat to the prosperous times of the 1920s, continued to believe the economy would eventually take care of itself. Led by President Herbert Hoover, the government did not immediately intervene in the economy, and then later attempts were made to help the people and get the country’s economy back on track, it was too little, too late. Replacing Hoover in 1933 was Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose New Deal program helped in the recovery of the Great Depression and revolutionized government economic regulation. Objectives: Describe the political and economic policies of Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge and evaluate how these encouraged the lifestyles of the Roaring 20s and may have led to the Great Depression. Critically evaluate and compare the social culture of the‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ 1920s with a specific focus on consumers, immigrants, women, and the youth. Critically evaluate the social impact the Great Depression had on specific groups of people, including immigrants, farmers, families, and children. Analyze the effectiveness of Herbert Hoover’s and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s methods/plans for dealing with the Great Depression from a critical perspective. Unit 6: World War II soldiers on the battlefield with guns in their hands and smoke in the Unit 6, we will be focusing on World War II and the early years of the Cold War. As another war plagues Europe as a result of economic and political stability, the United States is once again in the situation of deciding on their stance and positioning in world affairs. The United States, still hurting from the Great Depression, will again adopt a policy of isolationism and neutrality, only to be dragged into war by the attack of Japan on Pearl Harbor. At this point, the United States is launched into full mobilization, proving to be an effective force for the Allies in both Europe and in the Pacific Ocean. This war will have a dramatic effect itself on the economy, society, and politics of the United States at home, as well as identifying the . as the defender of democracy. At the close of the Second World War, the United States and the Soviet Union would find themselves in a power struggle over political influence throughout the world. The Soviet Union seeking to spread Communist influences found itself in constant conflict with the United States who sought to contain communism and support democracy. On the home front, while World War II helped bring an end to the Great Depression, it brought with it the introduction of communism. This raised public anxiety over war and foreigners and led to political witch hunts. Objectives: Summarize the events in Europe and Asia that led to World War II and discuss the domestic and international policies and events that brought the . into the War. Analyze the effect the United States had on the outcome of World War II. Critically evaluate the effect World War II had on the economy and society of the United States. Critically evaluate and discuss the development of the Cold War and the events associated with the containment of Com‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍munism.
