In early April 2021, women’s soccer star and Miss Papua New Guinea 2019-2020 Lucy Maino (whose term had ended but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she remained in the position symbolically) was “stripped of her crown” (i.e. she is no longer taking on the responsibilities that should have already been passed to the new Miss PNG; her reign as Miss PNG remains intact because this incident happened after her actual term ended) after posting a video of herself twerking on TikTok (sparking questions about femininity, tradition, the patriarchy, colonialism, control of women’s bodies, control of indigenous peoples, sexualization of non-western/non-white individuals, influence of social media, etc.).

It’s not unheard of for a country to “strip” a pageant winner of her titles for conduct-based violations of contract or even because of a minority group’s interpretation of a woman’s actions. In fact, Mrs. Sri Lanka was stripped of her title in the same week!
You’re going to see many mentions of abuse. This does not mean that all men are abusers, or that the population is inherently bad. Rather, we want to look at this issue critically.

What effect did colonialism have on social roles (models) for men and women?
Why were women marginalized instead of men?
How does the influence of Western culture fuel already-tense situations like historical misogyny?
How much of the blame should be placed on the media (legitimate or social)?
What message does the removal of Miss PNG’s title send to women and girls?
What message does it send to men and boys?
What message does it send to the world?
