(Paper can be 3-6 pages; fewer points for fewer pages. See Grading below.) OVERVIEW In our previous units, we reviewed examples of the numerous challenges and opportunities that have faced African Americans and related groups. Now we are also going to include possible solutions to some of these problems. Your research paper will analyze (explain) your chosen topic with a specific thesis (argument) and original solution of your own, per the instructions and the Rubric/Checklist below. OBJECTIVES By the end of this assignment, you will be able to: Construct an appropriate research paper. Organize a logical, comprehensive analysis in your paper and potential solution to the main issue. Utilize (correctly) an appropriate number of relevant outside sources for your research paper. Paper Topics: Choose one, then decide on a SPECIFIC main issue from that topic. Fewer points if you try to talk about the entire topic. For example: Voting is one of the topics. A main issue could be Voter Suppression (efforts to prevent African Americans and other people of color from voting.) Beauty Business and Labor/Work Education Family Gender Health Music/Culture Police Spirituality/Religion Sports/Athletics Voting Overall Instructions: (See Checklist/Rubric below for reminders.) Your paper will consist of four overall aspects: Historical background of your main issue Include 3 full quotes (no more than 4) from The African American Odyssey with page and/or section numbers. Find quotes that help you explain briefly and specifically how and why, historically, your main issue affected African Americans. Also explain how and why it developed in this manner into the present day. OPTIONAL: (And only if there is a specific appropriate connection) you have the option to mention other Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC); not mandatory (not required). But if you do, provide specific examples. Fewer points for overly broad or vague information. –Include appropriate and specific African American Odyssey in-text quotes and citations (Scroll below to the Checklist/Rubric for details). –also include the citations on your separate citations page at the end of your document (not included in the paper’s page count). –Choose the academic format you are most familiar with (References for APA, or Bibliography for Chicago Manual of Style, or Works Cited for MLA.) Contemporary analysis (explanation) Analyze (explain) an important contemporary (current) aspect of your issue. Explain how and why it functions in this manner in the present day. Include 3 full in-text quotes and citations (no more than 4) for the full length paper from outside verifiable sources (that a reader can verify are timely and accurate- not more than five years old). –Give specific examples. Fewer points for overly broad or vague information. –Do not just summarize or overgeneralize. Fewer points will be given, if you do. –also include the outside source citations on your separate citation page at the end of your document. Provide a solution Propose an original solution to the issue or problem. Or substantially build on an existing solution that you specifically identify. Fewer points for overly broad or vague information. Put your solution in the BODY of the paper (not the conclusion). –If you build on an existing solution, give its exact name and its originators, so you don’t accidentally plagiarize someone else’s work. Include appropriate citations (in-text and on the citation page). –Clearly explain how your own solution specifically and appropriately improves or updates the existing solution and why the update is needed. Provide definition(s) –Provide dictionary definitions from verifiable sources for key terms and concepts you use. These sources should not be counted as part of your 3-4 verifiable sources for your full length paper quotes. –Do NOT make up your own definitions. Reminders about your issue: Choose an overall topic. (Then pick a main issue from that topic.) Choose a SPECIFIC main issue from that overall topic. Fewer points if you try to talk about the entire topic. In this research paper, you will first briefly explain the historical aspect of the specific issue, then explain how and why the issue operates today. Do not just summarize. This is not a personal essay based on your personal ideas or opinions, or that of your family/friends or other individual. Also, it should NOT be a biography of individual(s). Provide definition(s) from verifiable sources for key terms and concepts you use. These sources should not be counted as part of your (full-length paper) 3-4 verifiable sources for your full length paper quotes. Be sure not to overgeneralize. Select a particular city, county or state as your examples, so your sources will match with specific statistics. Then propose an original solution to the issue. See below for example. Solution Example Propose an original solution to the issue or problem. Or substantially build on an existing solution (giving credit to the originators of the original solution and clearly explaining how your additions appropriately improve or update the existing solution). The solution should be in the body of the paper, not the conclusion. Regarding a specific original possible solution to the contemporary version of the topic: Example of paragraphs in the body of the paper (not the conclusion), giving a specifically named existing solution, then a possible original solution that builds on it. A possible solution to mass incarceration and forced prison labor today could include more African Americans having their own businesses to employ younger black people, so they stay out of jail. One project that has already been started is Beyonce’s BeyGOOD Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund (2020), a collaboration with the national black non-profit organization, the NAACP (“Inclusive Economy”). More can be done to build on that initial project. Parental committees could be created in each Los Angeles school district to raise funds from businesses, families and neighbors to fund at least one small business in their area, which would employ at least two to three students after school each day. The students would be employed and would also be able to stay off the streets to avoid potential conflict with police officers who might discriminate against them and try to force an arrest. Definitions, Sources and Citations Provide dictionary definitions of key terms and concepts with citations. Include 3 full quotes (no more than 4) from The African American Odyssey with page and/or section numbers. Also use a minimum of 3-4 full quotes from outside verifiable sources (that a reader can verify are timely (not more than 5 years old) for your (full-length paper). Do NOT use: social media, personal blogs, personal or family opinions, or course lecture materials as outside sources, videos, Wikipedia or inappropriate semi-entertainment open-source webpages such as Vice or Medium. Do not use articles that are more than 5 years old. See the Checklist/Rubric to review and make sure your submission complies with all requirements. Grading: Pages: Choices (fewer points for fewer pages) 5–6 full (not partial) pages (minimum 3-4 verifiable sources) – Maximum possible -100 points, possibly less; Maximum possible-Late: 80 points. (Fewer points may be given for pages within the 5-6 page range, if some information is missing or inappropriate, per the Checklist/Rubric and full requirements which were presented above.) 4-4 3/4 full (not partial) pages (with minimum 2-3 verifiable sources) – Maximum possible-75 points, possibly less. Maximum possible-Late: 60 points, possibly less (per the Checklist/Rubric and full requirements which were presented above.) In case even fewer pages are submitted, they will be graded as follows: 2 ½- 3 3/4 full (not partial) pages (with minimum 1-2 verifiable sources) – Maximum possible-50 points, possibly less. Maximum possible-Late: 40 points, possibly less (per the Checklist/Rubric and full requirements which were presented above.) Academic format Use the appropriate academic format for your in-text quotes and citations, as well as the citation page you use, depending on which academic format you choose. Use the latest version of the format with which you are most familiar for citations: MLA, Chicago or APA. For APA-You do not need an abstract or methodology section for your paper in this course. Formatting (No Google Docs, please) Your paper should be double-spaced, small font, such as Calibri 12 point; fewer points for less pages, overly large font or overly wide spacing.
