The purpose of the informative speech assignment is to inform the audience about something that is important and relevant. Your topic should be as specific as possible and narrow enough so that it can be discussed in five to seven minutes. This assignment is worth 150 points total 125 points for the speech presentation and 25 points for the outline.
You are free to choose any topic that interests you, but there are some limitations nothing illegal, immoral, or unethical (i.e., how to obtain a fake I.D.), no overly religious topics (i.e., discussing the superior nature of a religion, God, or gods), nothing extremely controversial (i.e., abortion, organ donation), and so on.  Also, you may not bring illegal drugs, alcohol, guns/ammunition or weapons of any kind.
Because we will only have one class period to present informative speeches it is imperative that you be prepared to present your speech on the assigned day.  No make-up speeches will be allowed without proper documentation.
REQUIREMENTS
Your speech must be 5-7 minutes in length. Going under or over the time allotment by more than 15 seconds will result in the lowering of your presentation grade by one (1) letter grade.
If your cell phone, or any other electronic device in your possession, goes off during any students presentation, 50 points will be deducted from your grade. If you walk into class late during another students presentation, 50 points will be deducted from your grade.
You must submit a formal, typed outline in hard copy (DO NOT submit it through Canvas) to me immediately BEFORE your presentation. If you come to class on the day you are to present without the outline, you will not be allowed to present your speech NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
You will be allowed to use a maximum of ten (10) 3 x 5 note cards while speaking. Your note cards are to be used to keep you on track, prompt you should you lose your place, and/or for any documented information in your speech. Your note cards are NOT to manuscript your speech.
You need three (3) sources. You must include the bibliographic information for these sources on your speech outline, and it must be in proper APA format.
You must have at least one type of audio/visual aid that helps to clarify or supplement your presentation.
PowerPoint may only be used for charts, graphs, or photographs.
Speeches must be delivered extemporaneously. Anyone reading their speech will receive a zero for the delivery of said speech – I’m REALLY not kidding on this one!
