Description
Read “IT Doesn’t Matter” by Carr published in Harvard Business Review in 2003. Then, write an
essay based on what you learned this semester from the textbook, cases, supplemental readings,
and your personal experience discussing his viewpoints and whether you agree or not. The final
exam should be double-spaced with a 12-size font and 5-page maximum excluding the coverage
page or references. Please cite references properly.
In your essay, please answer the following questions:
1. What are proprietary vs. infrastructural technologies? Can you give some examples?
Which technology was identified by Carr as being more important for a business to gain
competitive advantage? Why? (40 points)
2. What technologies did Carr compare IT to when making his argument that IT is a
commodity? Is IT similar to these technologies? Why or why not? (40 points)
3. What were the three reasons Carr cited for arguing that IT is a commodity? Do you
agree? Why or why not? (40 points)
4. Now more than a decade after Carr’s article was published, does IT matter? Why or why
not? Relate to your experience and observations during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
(80 points)
When answering the above questions:
• Use the knowledge you learned this semester from the textbook, cases, supplemental
readings, your personal work and life experience, as well as what you read in the article,
to support your arguments.
• You are encouraged to conduct additional research in professional magazines and
databases to provide better insight into the issues.
• In addition to stating the basic facts, you are required to provide an analysis of the issues
and your take on the issues based on the knowledge we have learned in the class.
• Divide your essay into different sections with the questions as the section headings.
