Prompt: This week, we have continued our readings in regionalism (and realism, by suit), and have taken on intersectional oppressions as well as the racial issues that we saw brought forth in Twain’s writing last week. Intersectionality is, essentially, the interchange between different markers of oppression (for example, a woman of color in the US experiences oppression differently than a white woman does. While they have the shared oppression of being a woman, they have very different racial experiences). Using your readings from this week, analyze how institutions within society (religion, education, government, etc) have marginalized people within different sectors of society. You should use at least 3 of the stories, and you must discuss and analyze how and why the authors might be depicting their characters in each situation. The stories for this week are: Bierce – “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” Jewett – “A White Heron” Chopin – “Desiree’s Baby,” “The Story of an Hour”
