The Reading Journal will be collected in Week 7. As you progress through this class, you will practice active, engaged reading by keeping a reading journal. You will write eight 0.5- to 1-page entries over Weeks 1 – 7 of class. The journal is informal in tone but should still be carefully edited and clearly structured with each entry labeled (e.g., Entry 1/Week 2/Cultural Values in “The Three Spinning Women”). Each week I will give you different response options for you to respond to in your journey. Write no more than two entries per week. Your journal must contain a works cited in APA format. (CLO 1) Choose a set of questions from the options below to write your next entry in your journal. Week 6 Reading Journal Questions Discuss how Palacio represents difference in Wonder. What connections do you see between Couser’s “Disability, Life Narrative, and Representation” and how disability is represented in Wonder. Use specific examples. In Wonder there are some voices that we do not get to hear. Choose a character who does not get to narrate and reflect on why you think Palacio might have made this choice. How would including this voice have changed the novel? Reflect on the use of popular culture references in Wonder. Choose a specific reference (e.g., Star Wars, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” and Natalie Merchant’s “Wonder”) and engage with it by watching a trailer or listening to the song. Then reflect on how this reference adds to the novel Wonder. Use specific examples. Describe a moment in which a character is faced with a moral decision in Wonder. What are the character’s options? What choice does the character make and what values inform this choice? What commentary does the novel offer the child reader about the morality of the character’s decision? Evaluate what this is teaching children about moral character and discernment. In our Biblical Basis Reflection, we saw how important the spiritual roots of a text is for promoting spiritual development. Choose one of the readings for the week and reflect on how this piece promotes spiritual growth in children. Use specific examples.
