Arguments often rely on analogy. For instance, in his article “The Tyranny of Choice,” Barry Schwartz compares universities to shopping malls. Schwartz claims that colleges today offer students too many choices, and then he provides evidence for this comparison and explores its implications.
In your essay, create an analogy, a comparison between two things your readers might not immediately connect themselves. You could relate two objects, ideas, places, experiences, people, or whatever else interests you. Your thesis statement should make clear what the analogy helps us see. What makes this correspondence important? In other words, “So what?”
Here are some suggestions to help you develop a focused idea:
You need not devote equal space to both parts of the analogy. To decide what to emphasize, think about what you want your essay to show.
The analogy’s halves don’t need to align in every way, especially if you acknowledge where the comparison erodes. How far does the analogy extend? What are its limitations?
Don’t settle for noting general similarities. For instance, what would you risk in likening human relationships to games because both involve chance? How does that broad analogy differ from Suki Finn’s argument about dating and Texas Hold’em?
Avoid cliché. You don’t need to remind anyone that life is a journey or that time is money.
Choose subjects that will allow you to write in detail without drawing on outside sources. You don’t have space to argue thoroughly that America resembles the Roman Empire, and that claim would also require substantial research!
