This assignment is your first opportunity to use the tool, Microsoft Project, to develop and visualize project work. Access to the Microsoft Project software is made available to you using the virtual lab environment you accessed in week 1. In The Virtual Machine instructions in Course Resources, you’ll find instructions for saving your work in this remote work environment. Past students have often found saving their work to be difficult, so I recommend completing Part 1 and 2 together and completing this assignment from start to finish at one time.
Getting Started
Building on the Statement of Work you created last week, you will use Microsoft Project to recreate the tasks you have identified. I provided this video last week for anyone interested in getting a jump start on using the software. You’ll need to enter these tasks before moving on to the Responsibility Matrix part of this assignment.

Part I: Responsibility Matrix
Continue to build on your course project by completing a Responsibility Matrix (RM) using Microsoft Project. Make whatever assumptions necessary to complete the assignment, but use roles (not individual’s names) to assign responsibility.
For example, instead of assigning the task of hiring subcontractors to “Sheila White,” assign that responsibility to the “Human Resource Manager.”
For this assignment, at least five task assignments should be created using roles, as opposed to names. The video below walks you through the process of assigning resources (people) to tasks.
SUBMISSION FOR PART 1 | After completing this part of the assignment, print the Resource Overview Report as a PDF. I have provided help documentation for this process at the end of these assignment instructions.

You may find identifying resources using the Responsibility Matrix document provided by the publisher helpful, download the RM template and complete rows and columns and enter your estimates in each cell before working in Microsoft Project (this is not required).
Part 2: WBS and Sequencing
For the next part of this assignment, you will prepare a full WBS enumeration of possible tasks for your course project down to level X.X.X using Microsoft Project. You are building on the Responsibility Matrix completed in part 1. Your work breakdown structure should include:
the project name (top-level summary task)
deliverable summary tasks
lower level work packages
Then, assign a duration for each task based on your own best estimate. Once you have your task hierarchy (summary tasks and work packages) and duration estimates, analyze the relationships between tasks to put them in the proper sequence. Identify tasks that fit into the following categories:
Tasks that can be started without any predecessor tasks being finished.
Tasks that must have other tasks finished first before they can be started.
Tasks that require time but allow you to do other tasks while they get done.
Tasks that you start with the plan that they finish at the same time.
Use the “Predecessors” column in the Gantt view within MS Project to identify tasks which cannot be started prior to the completion of one or more other tasks. Remember to be cautious here. It is true you cannot put shingles up before the roof is framed, but be careful not to assign a predecessor to a task if it doesn’t really exist.
SUBMISSION FOR PART 2 | After completing your WBS in the Gantt chart view of MS Project, print your Gannt view (showing your WBS) to a PDF.

In the demonstration above, you will see how to use the tools in MS Project to create a task list and organize it into a leveled Work Breakdown Structure.
Assignment Submission Requirements

report in MS Project
Tom Henry. (Apr 14, 2021). Export from Microsoft Project to PDF/Word/Other – Including the Gantt Chart! Youtube.
For this assignment you will submit two PDFs created in Microsoft Project:
The Resource Overview Report from Part 1
The Gantt Chart View from Part 2
I recommend completing both parts of the assignment at one time. This alleviates the additional steps of downloading and reuploading your work in the virtual lab environment.
Once completed, please upload your two PDFs into Canvas.
