This exam consists of 4 questions which are divided into background research questions to prepare you for answering the main essay question. You need to submit both portions of each question for credit.
The exam is designed to be answered over the course of a week, not in one sitting or in a few hours. You need to look up the background information completely and accurately and consider it. I would suggest outlining each question when you download the exam when it is posted. Then I suggest going through the lectures and finding the appropriate material and rough answering the background questions. When you have completed this for the entire exam, then you can start answering the essay questions. These questions are both factually centered and also what you personally think of the paintings. The exam will be graded on your engagement with the material – it is about looking and thinking carefully/analyzing, and then comparing. It is not an exercise in just looking up answers and it is not an exercise in memorization. It is an exercise in looking and thinking about each work that is listed.
I will grade strictly on the factual information in the background sections of each question. For the essay question itself, I am not looking for a specific answer, but rather a range of answers and this will vary from person to person. Take you time – answering just one question a day will still give you two days to review the entire exam.
All of the answers to the background questions will be found in the pdf files of the lectures posted to canvas and also covered in the zoom recordings. You may use any information in my posted pdf lectures without citing a source. You may not google the answers or inquire for the answers from a Chatbot as a few people did on the last exam. The answers that will be returned via a Google search or Chatbot generated answer will not match those in the posted lectures. Because this is an exercise in looking and analyzing in your own words, anything from outside of the posted lectures or textbook will not be permitted and that question will be marked wrong.
4 questions – 25 points each.
