You’re the Best Artist!
Artists have copied other artists for centuries. It is how we learn, how we pay respect, and how we destroy and re-invent. It is your task to create either an Exact Replica or a Contemporary Parody of an artwork chosen from the list on the next page – the goal is to replicate the artwork in its entirety with your best effort and craftsmanship.
What you will need:
• A plain sheet of paper (unlined)
• An image of one of the artworks listed below
• Materials of your choice (drawing, painting, photography, collage, crayons, colored pencils, macaroni, beads, pipe cleaners, hole punches…whatever you want).
Instructions: Note that you have 2 options – Choose one:
OPTION 1: Create an Exact Replica: try to come as close to possible to recreate the art work you chose using whatever medium you chose. The idea is to replicate the artwork to the best of your ability.
OPTION 2: Create a Contemporary Parody: take the artwork chosen and create your own work that pokes fun at the famous artwork. (See, for example, the image above – one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stands in for the famous painting of Whistler’s Mother). • No matter which option you choose, you will need to write a one-page (500 word) explanation of your work and how it relates to the artist. What were you drawn to about the artwork, and what are your personal feelings about why this artist is important? To do this you will probably need to do some research about the artist and artwork; however, the statement should be written from your perspective, using first-person “I” language, and not just a bio or list of facts about the artist.
