the late 19th century.
Answer the following on a separate sheet of paper. Each response should be 3-5 sentences.
1. The novel is an immigrant story. Discuss the different immigrant groups depicted and what their

they first arrived? Why did they come to the US? How did the other immigrant families treat them?
2. In the second chapter, Jim’s family moves to town from their farm. How is town life different from
the farm? Why are the girls attracted to live and work in the town rather than stay on the farm?
3. The role of women is an important part of the novel. What were the expectations for women on the
farm? What opportunities do they have in town? How are they treated in town? What opportunities
does Jim have that the women do not?
4. The landscape of the Great Plains plays an important part of the story, especially in the first chapter.
How does Cather describe it? How does it influence Jim and Ántonia?
