This assignment focuses on recognizing negative shape as a way to define proportion, particularly in complex objects. Materials Needed:
2 pages of 14×17 Drawing Paper
Charcoal
Kneaded Eraser
White Eraser
Paper towel
Still Life Set Up:
3-5 objects with interior and exterior contours. Follow the general guidelines for creating a still life in the “Getting Started” module. For these drawings, you want to select items that have complex interior and exterior contours: obects such as a plant, a wheel, or an action figure will work well, while objects such as a cup, apple, or book will not. Ideally, set up the items with some sort of neutral backdrop, such as a piece of board or a sheet. The objects can overlap, but you should be able to see a fair amount of the backdrop through the interior contours of the object. Drawings:
After viewing the Reductive and Additive Negative space demo video, create 2 drawings:
1 reductive negative space drawing
1 additive negative space drawing
Determine your composition and ensure that you have a closed composition, meaning that your objects extend to the edge of your page. This means you will “zoom in” a bit on your still life, though you should still try to capture as much of the still life as possible – don’t zoom in on just one object. For the Reductive Negative space drawing, use your eraser to remove the areas of negative space. Focus on looking at the negative space (the area around the objects), not the objects themselves. This will feel unnatural at first. You may need to add more charcoal back in to adjust a shape, and then reduce it back out with your eraser. Your finished drawing will show the objects in flat silhouette, with flat dark positive space, and light negative space where you have erased out the ground. For the Additive Negative space drawing, use your charcoal to draw the areas of negative space. Make sure you are drawing the negative space, not outlining the positive space and then filling in the negative space. Your finished drawing will show the objects in flat silhouette, and will have flat black negative space and flat white positive space, without any outlines visible.
