2) Read “On Being Brought from Africa to America” as an example of dual cultural identity. Poet and critic Naomi Long Madgett has argued that images of light and dark and the ambiguity of the last two lines suggest that this poem is not as accepting of Western culture as it may seem on a first reading. Do you agree? Why or why not?
3)We have looked at some political documents by Paine, Franklin and now Jefferson. What about Freneau’s poems on the charged political topics of slavery (“To Sir Toby”) and Indian Removal (“The Indian Burying Ground”) falls outside the bounds of the founders’ purview? What do these poems perhaps give us that political documents cannot?
