Assignement description:
A scientific literature review should:
provide a clear statement and scope of the topic
provide a range of research on the topic and not only “good” data
critically analyze a selected topic using a published body of knowledge
identify areas of controversy in the literature
Structuring Your Literature Review:
There are many approaches to organizing a literature review and yours will depend on your topic, purpose, audience, and findings of your review. Like any effective writing, your piece should make logical sense to your reader and guide them through the content you present. The information you include from your sources must be synthesized concisely and organized logically.
Here is a suggested outline for the literature review:
Opening/introduction
Define and contextualize the topic of your review and provide any background information that helps your reader to understand the relevance of conducting a review of the current literature. Explain your reason or perspective for reviewing the literature on this topic. Be sure that you have organized your articles or sources in a way that makes logical sense for your review’s topic and purpose (e.g., by emergent themes, methodologies, chronologically, etc.) and include an explanation of how you have organized your small-scale literature review. You may want to tell the reader specific information on how many articles you reviewed, where they are from, etc. Briefly describe findings from articles that provide answers to your research question. (~2 paragraphs)
Body paragraphs/sections
The body of your small-scale literature review will be categorized based on your organizational choice, as noted above. Include section headings for each theme/category and be sure you order them logically and craft transitions between each.
This will be a section that describes the first theme/methodology/etc. that you identified and compare, contrast, and/or connect with the articles you’ve selected for this section.
This will be a section that describes the second theme/methodology/etc. that you identified and compare, contrast, and/or connect with the articles you’ve selected for this section.
This will be a section that describes the third theme/methodology/etc. that you identified and compare, contrast, and/or connect with the articles you’ve selected for this section.
Continue for as many sections as you have. Three is a nice number to aim for, but you can include more. Refer to other sources as you write. Though your review is categorized, it should illustrate relationships among the research you review.
Summary/conclusion/recommendation for further research
This is the last 1-2 paragraphs of your small-scale literature review. It is important to summarize the main findings from the articles that you reviewed and to point out the information that you found particularly important or that answered the research question you established. Conclude this paragraph by discussing where there are gaps in the literature, how your review can contribute to or inform future studies in this area, or other relevant information your reader should know based on the results of your review.
