In Module 1, we explored the explorers, beginning with the many tribes that crossed the Bering land bridge some 17,000 years ago to the daring European sailors who fearlessly sailed searching adventure, to the first batch of colonial settlers who landed in Jamestown in May of 1607. By the early 1600s, life was filled with risk, challenge, and reward. How and why was this the case? What motivated the native tribes of Mesoamerica (and beyond) during their time on earth? What sustained them in face of adversity? How did they respond to the arrival of Europeans differently, depending upon where they lived and the circumstances of the arrival of European explorers and settlers on their doorstep?
For Europeans and the early settlers who joined the migration to America, what motivated them to leave the safety and comfort of their lives and set out to explore and settle a new, scary, and unforgiving world? What common vision did they share? Conversely, in what ways – depending upon when they traveled, why, where they came from, and where they landed – did their ideas and beliefs differ? Do you believe it was inevitable that the worlds of the Americas and Europe would collide violently and ultimately spell doom for the first Americans? How might history have looked different had the indigenous populations of south, central, and north America not have succumbed to disease?
Today we heard the stories of both explorers and the indigenous leaders they encountered here in America. Which story did you find the most interesting and why? What question would you have asked if your person was here among us today? Why would you ask this question of them?
