What principles of patient confidentiality might be an issue? Consider legal and ethical.
How might this nurse use a communication device to support safe patient practices?
What would your organization’s policy on ‘personal communication device use in a patient care setting’ reveal related to this case? (If your organization does not have a written policy, or you are not currently working in an organization, what do you think should be included in such a policy and why?)
Then 75 word response to this classmate : The use of personal devices has been increasing as technology becomes part of everyday life. Although there are benefits to personal devices in healthcare such as immediate access to the EMH, diagnostic results, orders, etc there are concerns regarding confidentiality and privacy (Hebda, 2019). A survey showed that many nurses feel personal devices can lead to distraction since phones are often used for things not related to work or patient care (McBride & LeVasseur, 2017). The scenario mentioned this week is one that many of us could encounter. Although it is more convenient for the nurse to snap a picture and send it to the physician it should not be done with a personal device. There should be informed consent before taking a photo and there should be additional security features uploaded on the device to maintain confidentiality. It is critical that nurses be well versed in the legal and cultural aspect of privacy as well their employers policies regarding the use of personal devices (Hebda, 2019). Where I work now the use of cellphones is very common. The surgeons, anesthesiologist and staff communicate using their cellphones. Hebda, T., Hunter, K., & Czar, P. (2019).
