Working in teams, students will participate in a group discussion and then write an essay explaining what they perceive to be the outside world’s assumptions and inferences about their identities based on some characteristic by which people might classify them. Students will complete an evaluation of their teammates’ participation on a scale of 0-10. 0 being no contribution and 10 being an outstanding contribution.
Step 1: Start by individually making some notes and reflecting on what inferences are made about you.  How does this affect you?  What is untrue about the inferences? Consider the following questions:
What do you perceive to be the outside world’s assumptions and inferences about your ethnic identity or some other characteristic by which people might classify you?
For example, you might identify with a national or ethnic group, or you might identify with people having certain physical traits in common, such as being thin, fat, tall, short, bald, blond, etc. You might also identify with a group that is classified by non-physical traits such as professional, political, or religious affiliation or identification with a minority gender orientation or interest group. The point here is to be able to identify yourself with a group so that you can then explore and examine the negative or positive automatic assumptions people often apply to such groups.
Step 2: After reflecting on the inferences, give your answers to your teammates and have a thorough discussion about inferences and how they affect each of you given your original ideas.  Respond also to your teammates about what you have learned about inferences made about them.
Step 3: After conducting a substantial discussion on this topic, write an essay describing one or more inferences/assumptions made about a team member (or team members) based on their identification with a specific ethnic group, physical characteristics, gender, religious affiliation, etc.  Reflect on and describe the negative or positive assumptions that people infer about these groups. Write a two to five-page essay explaining what you perceive to be the outside world’s assumptions and inferences about the chosen person(s) and how these inferences may affect the individual(s). Your essay should be in APA format with a title page, abstract, body, and references list.
Step 4: After completing the team assignment, every student will submit an essay. Each student must also complete a Peer Evaluation Form (attached above) and submit it with the completed assignment.
